People convert ITMZ files when a mind map must be opened in Microsoft Excel, delivered as a spreadsheet, or processed with spreadsheet tools. XLS provides a row-and-column structure that is more suitable for tabular editing and older Microsoft Office workflows.
What the ITMZ format is
ITMZ is the native mind-map document format used by iThoughts, including iThoughts applications for desktop and mobile platforms. It stores a map's central topic, branches, notes, relationships, labels, and other mind-map structure in a format intended for continued editing in iThoughts.
You normally encounter an ITMZ file when someone shares an iThoughts mind map, when a map is exported from iThoughts, or when an older map is archived in its original editable form. Spreadsheet programs such as Excel do not natively open ITMZ files.
What the XLS format is
XLS is the binary spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel 97–2003. It stores data in worksheets made of rows and columns and supports formulas, cell formatting, charts, and basic spreadsheet operations.
XLS is useful when the recipient uses an older Excel release, an application that specifically requires the legacy Excel format, or a workflow based on tabular data rather than visual map editing. Newer Excel versions generally prefer XLSX, but they can open and save XLS files.
How to convert ITMZ to XLS
- Make a copy of the original
.itmzfile so the source remains available for editing in iThoughts. - Open the ITMZ-to-XLS converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the ITMZ file, select
XLSas the output format, and start the conversion. - Download the generated spreadsheet and open it in Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or another program that supports XLS.
- Check the worksheet structure before sharing it. Save a newer copy as File → Save As with the XLSX format if the recipient does not require legacy XLS.
The conversion can be performed online for free without installing software. The resulting workbook represents the map as spreadsheet data rather than as an editable iThoughts diagram.
Quality and compatibility limits
A mind map is hierarchical and spatial, while XLS is tabular. The converter may place topics on separate rows, use columns for hierarchy levels, and transfer notes or labels into additional columns. Branch geometry, canvas layout, floating topics, visual themes, cross-links, icons, and attachments may not have equivalent XLS fields.
Review long branches, duplicate topic names, empty topics, and special characters after conversion. The legacy XLS format supports up to 65,536 rows and 256 columns; very large maps can exceed those limits, especially when each hierarchy level becomes a separate column.
