What the MIND format is
MIND is a project format used by GitMind for mind maps and flowcharts. It stores the map's central topic, branches, node text, hierarchy, connections, notes, and visual settings in a structured project file.
You usually encounter a MIND file after saving or downloading a map from GitMind. It is intended to preserve an editable diagram rather than present the information as a conventional table, so spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel do not normally open it directly.
What the XLS format is
XLS is the binary workbook format used by Microsoft Excel and compatible spreadsheet applications, especially versions before the newer XLSX format became standard. It organizes information into worksheets, rows, columns, and cells.
An XLS copy is useful when the map's content must be sorted, filtered, annotated, printed as a report, or processed with spreadsheet formulas. It is also more suitable than a diagram file for exchanging tabular topic lists with users who do not have mind-mapping software.
How to convert MIND to XLS
The practical method is to use the MIND-to-XLS converter on 101convert.com; it runs in a web browser and does not require desktop software.
- Open the MIND to XLS conversion page on 101convert.com.
- Select the source file with
Choose File, or use the page's file-upload control. - Confirm
MINDas the input format andXLSas the output format if the page provides format selectors. - Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
- Download the resulting
.xlsworkbook and open it in Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or another application that supports XLS.
For a manual workflow, open the map in GitMind and first export or copy its topic data into a tabular format, then save the result from a spreadsheet application through File → Save As and choose Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls). This route is useful when you need to choose which node fields become columns, but it is not a direct preservation of the original diagram.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion changes a visual hierarchy into a table. Node text and parent-child relationships can be retained as rows, indentation, or level columns, but branches, curved connectors, icons, colors, layout coordinates, and other diagram styling may not have an equivalent in XLS.
After downloading, check several branches in the workbook, especially maps containing nested levels, multiline notes, special characters, or duplicate topic names. Excel may display the data correctly while losing the original map's visual structure.
XLS has a worksheet limit of 65,536 rows and 256 columns. A large map can exceed these limits or require multiple worksheets. If the converted file is intended for a modern Excel workflow and does not need legacy compatibility, opening it and saving a separate XLSX copy can avoid some XLS limitations.
