A mind map may need conversion when a reporting system, spreadsheet workflow, or recipient requires an Excel workbook instead of a diagram file. Converting it to XLS turns topics into editable rows and columns for filtering, sorting, analysis, or import.
What the MM format is
MM is the XML-based mind-map format used primarily by FreeMind and Freeplane. An .mm file stores a tree of nodes and attributes such as topic text, parent-child relationships, notes, hyperlinks, icons, colors, and folded states. The hierarchy is the data; the mind-map application calculates the visual layout.
MM files commonly contain project outlines, brainstorms, research structures, meeting plans, and other diagrams created with FreeMind-compatible software. An MM file is not a spreadsheet, and its radial or branch-based appearance is not part of the XLS format.
What the XLS format is
XLS is Microsoft Excel's binary workbook format for Excel 97–2003. Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and other spreadsheet applications can open it. XLS supports rows and columns, formulas, sorting, filtering, charts, and tabular data exchange with older business systems.
Unlike newer XLSX workbooks, XLS is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns and lacks some modern Excel features. Use it when the receiving application specifically requires the older format. A converted mind map normally becomes one row per node, with columns such as topic text, parent topic, depth, full path, notes, or hyperlinks.
How to convert MM to XLS
The built-in converter on 101convert.com can process the conversion without installing desktop software:
- Open the MM-to-XLS conversion page on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.mmfile created by FreeMind or Freeplane. - Select
XLSas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the resulting workbook and open it in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc.
- Check the node rows, hierarchy columns, notes, hyperlinks, character encoding, and row order before using the workbook for reporting or import.
For a local alternative, open the file in FreeMind or Freeplane and use that version's CSV or tabular export, if available. Open the exported CSV in Excel or Calc, verify the delimiter and character encoding, then use File → Save As and select Excel 97–2003 (*.xls). CSV is an intermediary, not a format that preserves the original mind-map layout.
Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion flattens a tree into a table. Hierarchy may be represented by a parent column, numeric depth, indentation, or a path such as Project / Research / Sources; the exact columns depend on the converter or export function.
Branch geometry, radial layout, folded-state display, colors, icons, images, summaries, and other visual styling usually do not transfer. Notes and hyperlinks transfer only when the conversion process reads those MM attributes. Review non-ASCII characters, long text, dates, formulas, and hyperlinks in the generated workbook.
Keep the original MM file. An XLS workbook generally cannot reconstruct the original diagram or restore metadata that was omitted during conversion. Do not upload confidential maps unless the converter's handling and retention policy is acceptable.
