What the XLS format is
.xls is the binary spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel 97–2003 and supported by many spreadsheet programs. It is useful when the receiving application does not accept newer .xlsx files, or when the converted map must be sorted, filtered, calculated, or imported as tabular data.
