EMMX files are commonly created by EdrawMind, while ODT files are accepted by LibreOffice Writer and other OpenDocument-compatible word processors. Conversion is useful when a mind map must be delivered as a standard editable document, archived in an open format, or opened on a computer without EdrawMind.

What the EMMX format is

EMMX is the native project format used by EdrawMind for mind maps and related visual diagrams. It stores the map's topic hierarchy, relationships, styling, notes, labels, boundaries, hyperlinks, attachments, and other project data in a form intended for continued editing in EdrawMind.

You normally encounter EMMX files when someone sends an EdrawMind project, when a mind map is exported from the EdrawMind desktop application, or when an EdrawMind workspace is backed up. An EMMX file is not a conventional word-processing document, so programs such as LibreOffice Writer cannot normally open it as an editable text file.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, and other office applications. It stores paragraphs, headings, tables, images, page layout, styles, headers, footers, and other word-processing content in an open, documented standard.

ODT is suitable for submitting a mind-map outline as a report, adding explanatory prose, editing content without the original diagram application, and long-term document storage. It does not preserve EMMX's complete native map model: branches generally become an outline, a rendered diagram, or both.

How to convert EMMX to ODT

Using the online converter

  1. Open the EMMX-to-ODT conversion page on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .emmx file, select ODT as the output format, and start the conversion.
  3. Download the resulting .odt file and open it in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible application.

This method requires no installed conversion software. Keep a copy of the original EMMX file because the ODT result is a document representation, not a replacement for the editable EdrawMind project.

Using EdrawMind and LibreOffice

  1. Open the EMMX project in EdrawMind.
  2. Use EdrawMind's export command and choose Word or .docx as the intermediate format. The exact menu label varies by EdrawMind version.
  3. Open the exported DOCX in LibreOffice Writer and choose File → Save As.
  4. Select ODF Text Document (.odt), then save the file.

For batch conversion of an intermediate DOCX file, LibreOffice can be run from a terminal:

soffice --headless --convert-to odt --outdir output input.docx

Replace input.docx with the exported Word filename and output with the destination directory.

Quality and compatibility

Check the converted document for branch order, indentation, page breaks, text wrapping, fonts, images, hyperlinks, and embedded attachments. Large maps may be split across pages or converted into a wide image rather than a conveniently editable outline.

If preserving the visual map is more important than editing its text, export a PDF or image from EdrawMind and insert it into an ODT document. If preserving branch-level editability is required, retain the EMMX source; ODT cannot represent all EdrawMind-specific relationships, themes, task data, or interactive features.
