What the ITMZ format is

ITMZ is the compressed mind-map format used by iThoughts and iThoughtsX. It stores a mind map's topics, relationships, notes, links, and some formatting in an application-specific package. You encounter it when someone shares an iThoughts map or when a map is saved from the iThoughts desktop or mobile app.

Renaming .itmz to .md does not convert the content: the resulting file still contains the ITMZ package rather than readable Markdown.

What the MD format is

MD is the conventional filename extension for Markdown, a plain-text markup format supported by editors, documentation systems, code repositories, and static-site generators. Headings, nested lists, links, emphasis, and code blocks represent the main structure without requiring the original mind-map application.

Markdown is useful when the map is primarily an outline or when its content needs version control, search, copy-and-paste editing, or long-term access in a text-based format.

How to convert ITMZ to MD

Using iThoughts

1. Open the .itmz file in iThoughts or iThoughtsX.
2. Check the map hierarchy and collapse or expand branches if the export settings use the current map view.
3. Choose File → Export → Markdown or the equivalent Share/Export → Markdown command on a mobile version.
4. Select the destination, choose whether notes and links should be included if those options are offered, and save the resulting .md file.
5. Open the Markdown file in a plain-text editor or Markdown previewer and verify heading levels, nested lists, links, and non-ASCII characters.

Menu names vary between iThoughts versions and operating systems. If Markdown is not listed directly, export to an intermediate outline format such as OPML or plain text only when another application can then produce Markdown; this route usually loses more map-specific data.

You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software: upload the ITMZ file, select MD as the output format, run the conversion, and download the generated Markdown file. Avoid uploading confidential maps unless the file-handling terms meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion is mainly a structural export. Topic levels normally become Markdown headings or nested list items, while relationships shown as graphical connectors, canvas positioning, themes, icons, colors, attachments, and embedded images may be omitted or represented as links. Review the output rather than treating it as a pixel-for-pixel copy of the mind map.

Markdown has multiple dialects, so features such as task lists, tables, footnotes, and internal anchors may render differently between GitHub, Markdown editors, and documentation systems. If the map contains sensitive information, prefer conversion in the installed iThoughts application instead of uploading the original ITMZ package.
