Free online MMAP to MD converter

MindManager creates MMAP files for editable mind maps, but many documentation tools and code repositories accept only Markdown (MD). Converting the map produces a portable text outline that can be edited, versioned, or shared without MindManager.

What the MMAP format is

MMAP is the native map format used by MindManager. It stores a mind map's topic hierarchy together with notes, hyperlinks, relationships, boundaries, icons, attachments, styles, and layout information.

You encounter MMAP files when someone sends a MindManager map, when a team archives project planning documents, or when a map is exported from MindManager for use in another application. The format is designed for graphical editing; ordinary text editors do not preserve its structure or presentation.

What the MD format is

In this workflow, MD means Markdown: plain text containing headings, lists, links, emphasis, and other lightweight formatting. Markdown editors, documentation systems, Git repositories, wikis, and static-site generators can read it without a proprietary mind-map application.

A converted map normally represents the root topic as a heading and nested topics as subordinate headings or indented lists. MD preserves the map's textual outline well, but it is not a graphical mind-map format and cannot retain every canvas-level feature.

How to actually convert MMAP to MD

The simplest method is the built-in converter on 101convert.com; it runs in a browser and does not require installed software.

1. Open the MMAP-to-MD converter on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the source file with Select file or drag the .mmap file into the upload area.
3. Set the output format to MD.
4. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
5. Download the resulting .md file and open it in a Markdown editor to check the hierarchy and links.

If the file contains confidential project information, use a locally installed MindManager workflow instead of uploading it. MindManager can export maps to intermediary formats such as HTML or Word through File → Export; those files can then be converted to Markdown with a suitable desktop document converter, although this route usually requires manual cleanup.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion is primarily an outline conversion. Topic text, nesting, notes, and many hyperlinks can become Markdown headings, lists, paragraphs, and links.

Canvas positions, themes, floating topics, relationship arrows, boundaries, icons, task metadata, attachments, embedded objects, and complex formatting may be omitted or represented as plain text. Images may require separate extraction, and some converters insert image references that must be checked after download.

Review the generated heading levels before publishing. A map with inconsistent or very deep nesting can produce confusing Markdown, and Markdown renderers differ in how they handle raw HTML, tables, task lists, and embedded media.
