What the MMAP format is

MMAP is the native mind-map format used by Mindjet MindManager. It stores a map’s central topic, branches, relationships, boundaries, notes, hyperlinks, icons, task data, formatting, and sometimes attached files. You typically encounter MMAP files in MindManager projects, exported workspaces, team archives, and documents shared by MindManager users.

MMAP is a structured project file rather than a static image or plain-text outline. Changing .mmap to .emmx does not convert its contents and can make the file unreadable.

What the EMMX format is

EMMX is the native document format of EdrawMind, a mind-mapping application. It is designed for editable maps containing topics, connectors, summaries, notes, themes, markers, hyperlinks, and presentation or outline information.

Use EMMX when the recipient works in EdrawMind, when the map must remain editable there, or when an EdrawMind workspace needs its native project format. It is not a universal interchange format, so applications other than EdrawMind may not open it directly.

How to actually convert MMAP to EMMX

Using EdrawMind desktop:

1. Make a copy of the original .mmap file. Keep MindManager available if the map contains features that may not import correctly.
2. Open EdrawMind and choose File → Import, then select the MindManager or MMAP import option if it is listed.
3. Choose the source .mmap file and let EdrawMind build the editable map.
4. Check topic hierarchy, floating topics, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, images, attachments, and task properties.
5. Choose File → Save As, select EdrawMind’s native format, and save the result with an .emmx extension.

Menu names can differ between EdrawMind releases. If the import menu does not accept MMAP, export the map from MindManager first as OPML, then import the OPML file into EdrawMind; this fallback usually retains the outline but loses more visual and application-specific data.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Direct import generally preserves the map’s hierarchy and common formatting, but proprietary MindManager features may not have equivalent EMMX representations. Review custom themes, relationship-line styles, boundaries, labels, task metadata, embedded objects, attachments, macros, and password-protected or encrypted maps.

Linked files may remain references to their original paths rather than becoming embedded in EMMX. Copy the linked resources with the converted map and test every hyperlink on the target computer. If exact visual fidelity is required for archiving, retain the original MMAP and also export a PDF; EMMX should be treated as the editable working copy.
