How to convert xmind to txt file
- Mind maps and flowcharts

A text-only system, basic editor, script, or archive may not support XMind files, so the map must be reduced to readable text. Converting an .xmind file produces a smaller, widely compatible outline, but it does not preserve the map's visual layout.
What the XMIND format is
XMIND is the file format used by XMind for mind maps and flowcharts. Depending on the XMind version, an .xmind file is a packaged archive containing structured map data and resources such as styles, notes, attachments, and images. XMind users create these files for brainstorming, project planning, meeting notes, outlines, organizational charts, and other hierarchical diagrams.
The package can contain more information than a plain outline: relationships between topics, labels, markers, hyperlinks, summaries, boundaries, presentation styles, and canvas positions may all be separate from the topic hierarchy.
What the TXT format is
TXT is a plain-text file containing characters without a required layout, font, color, or interactive object model. It opens in Notepad, text editors, command-line tools, document-management systems, and scripts without XMind.
TXT is suitable for text-only email systems, search indexing, simple archival copies, automated processing, and editing in any basic text editor. It cannot retain colors, icons, images, canvas positions, boundaries, summaries, active hyperlinks, or the visual connections between nonhierarchical topics. A converted file normally represents the central topic and child topics with line breaks, indentation, numbering, or another outline convention.
Convert XMIND to TXT online
- Open the XMIND-to-TXT converter on 101convert.com.
- Select or drag the
.xmindfile into the upload area. - Choose
TXTas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the resulting
.txtfile and open it in a UTF-8-capable editor.
This method requires no installed software. Do not upload confidential maps unless the service's data-handling terms are acceptable for that material.
Convert with XMind desktop
Export options vary by XMind edition and release. Some versions provide a text or plain-text export, while others provide outline-oriented formats such as Markdown, Word, or OPML instead.
- Open the map in XMind.
- Choose File → Export.
- If Text or Plain Text is available, select it, choose a destination, and save the file with a
.txtextension if XMind does not add one. - If text export is unavailable, choose Markdown when offered, then open the exported file in a local editor and save it as plain text. Alternatively, copy the map's outline and paste it into a plain-text editor before saving as
.txt.
Markdown conversion may leave heading markers, list symbols, or other markup in the TXT file; remove those characters if a script or receiving system requires a strictly plain outline. Word export can also introduce formatting that must be removed manually.
Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion preserves the textual hierarchy only as far as the selected converter can interpret it. Sibling order, collapsed branches, notes, labels, hyperlinks, summaries, relationship lines, attachments, and non-tree structures may be omitted, flattened, or represented differently. Open the result and compare important branches with the original map.
TXT has no single mandatory character encoding. Use UTF-8 for accented characters, non-Latin scripts, emoji, and symbols; opening UTF-8 text as a legacy ANSI encoding can produce incorrect characters. Line endings can also differ between Windows, macOS, and Linux, although modern editors usually detect them.
A TXT file is usually much smaller than the original XMind package because it excludes images, attachments, styles, and layout data. It is not a replacement for the original: retain the .xmind file when the map may need visual editing or complete structural recovery.
