People convert XMAP files to XLSX when a mind map's topics need sorting, filtering, calculating, or editing in spreadsheet software. XLSX also provides a more widely supported format for sharing structured map data with users who do not have XMind.

What the XMAP format is

XMAP is an XML-based mind-map file format associated with older versions of XMind, especially XMind 2008. It stores a map's central topic, branches, subtopics, notes, labels, markers, hyperlinks, and other structure rather than presenting information as ordinary spreadsheet cells.

You may encounter XMAP files in older XMind projects, archived team documentation, educational planning files, and exports from installations that predate the current .xmind package format. XMAP is not a generic image or diagram format, so changing its filename extension does not produce a usable spreadsheet.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is the XML-based workbook format used by Microsoft Excel and supported by LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets, and many data-processing tools. It is suitable for tabular operations such as sorting topics, filtering branches, adding status or owner columns, calculating values, and importing map content into databases or reports.

An XLSX export represents the map as rows and columns. It generally cannot preserve the original radial layout, branch geometry, topic positioning, or visual relationships exactly as they appear in XMind.

How to convert XMAP to XLSX

Using XMind

  1. Install a version of XMind that can open the older XMAP format. XMind 8 or another compatible legacy release is usually more suitable than a current release if the file will not open directly.
  2. Open the file with File → Open and select the .xmap file. If XMind prompts for conversion, save a working copy in its newer project format first.
  3. Choose File → Export → Excel or the equivalent Excel export command. Select the map or worksheet to export if the project contains multiple sheets.
  4. Choose an output location and save the result as .xlsx. Open the workbook in Excel or LibreOffice Calc and check the worksheet structure before sharing it.

Some older XMind editions do not include Excel export, or make it available only in a particular edition. If Excel is absent from the export list, export the map to CSV or plain text when available, then open that file in Calc or Excel and use File → Save As to create .xlsx. This fallback usually preserves text and hierarchy less completely than native Excel export.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software: upload the XMAP file, choose XLSX as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting workbook. Use this method only for files that are appropriate to upload to a third-party service, and retain the original XMAP as a backup.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • The conversion changes a visual map into tabular data; it does not reproduce the original canvas layout.
  • Deep branches may be placed in separate level columns, indented rows, or parent-child columns depending on the converter and XMind version.
  • Notes, hyperlinks, labels, markers, images, summaries, boundaries, and relationship arrows may be omitted or placed in separate columns.
  • After conversion, check accented characters, line breaks, hyperlinks, empty cells, duplicate topic names, and formulas beginning with characters such as = or +.
  • Do not use simple extension renaming, such as changing project.xmap to project.xlsx; the internal file structures are different and Excel will normally report a damaged or invalid workbook.
