FODG files often need conversion when a flowchart or mind map must be shared with users who work in Microsoft Word. DOCX is also more suitable for adding the diagram to a report, editing surrounding text, or meeting a document-management requirement.

What the FODG format is

FODG is the Flat XML variant of OpenDocument Graphics. It stores drawings such as flowcharts, organizational diagrams, mind maps, connectors, shapes, labels, and page layouts in a single XML-based file.

LibreOffice Draw is the main desktop application associated with FODG files. The format usually appears when a diagram is saved with File → Save As using the Flat XML format instead of the regular binary-style .odg format.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the Office Open XML document format used by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and other word processors. It is intended for documents containing paragraphs, tables, headings, images, captions, and embedded drawing content.

DOCX is preferable when the diagram must be delivered as part of a Word-compatible report or edited alongside normal document text. It is not a native mind-map or flowchart format, so converting a FODG drawing to DOCX can reduce the editability of individual shapes and connectors.

How to convert FODG to DOCX

Using the online converter

1. Open the FODG-to-DOCX converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .fodg file and select DOCX as the output format.
3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .docx file.
4. Open the result in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer and check page size, diagram scale, text wrapping, and connector positions.

Using LibreOffice Draw and Writer

1. Open the FODG file in LibreOffice Draw with File → Open.

4. Open LibreOffice Writer, create a document, and paste the drawing.

If direct pasting produces an unsuitable object, export the drawing from Draw as PDF or an image, insert that file into Writer with Insert → Image, and save the Writer document as DOCX.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A DOCX conversion may preserve the complete diagram as one embedded object or image rather than as separately editable Word shapes. Text can reflow if the original fonts are unavailable, and page scaling can move labels or connectors. Install the fonts used by the FODG file before opening it, and compare the converted document with the original at 100% zoom.

For continued editing as a flowchart, retain the original .fodg file. Use DOCX as the delivery format when Word compatibility and document integration matter more than native diagram editing.
