FODG files are useful for storing editable diagrams in LibreOffice Draw, but many browsers, documentation systems, and web applications expect SVG instead. Converting the drawing preserves its vector geometry in a format suitable for browser display, scalable diagrams, and further editing.

What the FODG format is

FODG means Flat OpenDocument Graphics. It is the uncompressed, XML-based form of an OpenDocument drawing, used for flowcharts, mind maps, organizational diagrams, technical sketches, and other vector artwork.

LibreOffice Draw is the main program associated with FODG files. Unlike the packaged .odg format, FODG stores the document as a single XML file, which makes it easier to inspect, version-control, or process with XML tools. SVG is a text-based XML format for two-dimensional vector graphics. Browsers, illustration programs, publishing tools, and documentation platforms can display SVG without rasterizing it.

SVG keeps lines, curves, shapes, and text scalable without the pixelation associated with bitmap formats. It is suitable for embedding a flowchart in an HTML page, editing in Inkscape or Illustrator, inserting a diagram into technical documentation, and archiving a drawing in a broadly supported vector format.

How to actually convert FODG to SVG

Using LibreOffice Draw

1. Open the .fodg file in LibreOffice Draw.
2. Check the page size, object positions, connectors, text, and line styles.
3. Choose File → Export.
4. Select SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg) as the file type, set the output filename, and confirm the export.
5. Open the resulting .svg in a web browser or vector editor to verify the appearance.

For repeated conversions, LibreOffice can run without its graphical interface:

Replace output with the destination directory and diagram.fodg with the source filename. The command requires LibreOffice to be installed and available as soffice in the system path. If the automatic filter is not selected correctly, open the file once in Draw and use the export dialog to identify the available SVG export filter.
