Free online MMD to SVG converter

A Mermaid diagram saved as an .mmd file may need conversion when another application accepts only SVG for embedding, printing, editing, or web publishing. SVG preserves the diagram as scalable vector artwork instead of a fixed-size raster image.

What the MMD format is

In the mind-map and flowchart context, .mmd is a plain-text Mermaid diagram source file. It contains Mermaid syntax for flowcharts, sequence diagrams, class diagrams, state diagrams, mind maps, and related visual structures; it does not normally contain the rendered graphic itself.

Mermaid files are created in Mermaid-compatible editors, documentation systems, Markdown projects, code repositories, and diagramming tools that support Mermaid. A file may contain declarations such as flowchart TD or mindmap, followed by nodes, connections, labels, and styling instructions.

What the SVG format is

SVG is an XML-based vector graphics format supported by web browsers, design applications, office software, documentation platforms, and many print workflows. It stores paths, shapes, text, and styling rather than a pixel grid, so a rendered diagram can be enlarged without the blur associated with PNG or JPEG.

Use SVG when the destination needs an embeddable web graphic, scalable documentation illustration, editable vector artwork, or a high-resolution print asset. The result is a rendered diagram; it is not usually a source file that can be edited back into Mermaid syntax.

How to convert MMD to SVG

The most direct desktop method is Mermaid CLI, whose executable is mmdc. Install Node.js, then install the CLI in a terminal:

npm install -g @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli

Save the Mermaid source as diagram.mmd, then run:

mmdc -i diagram.mmd -o diagram.svg

The input option selects the MMD source and the output option names the SVG file. For a custom theme or page configuration, create a JSON configuration file such as config.json and run:

mmdc -i diagram.mmd -o diagram.svg -c config.json

Quality and compatibility

The output depends on the Mermaid version used by the converter. Unsupported syntax, invalid indentation in mind maps, missing diagram declarations, or features introduced in a newer Mermaid release can cause errors or alter the layout. Test the source in a Mermaid preview before conversion.

SVG text may depend on installed fonts, so a diagram can reflow when opened on another system. For consistent appearance, use common fonts or convert text to outlines in a vector editor after rendering; outlining removes text editability and may increase file size. Interactive Mermaid behavior and source-level editability generally do not survive as SVG, and external images or custom assets may require separate handling.
