People convert FODG files when a recipient or document system accepts RTF but cannot open LibreOffice Draw diagrams. The conversion is also useful for placing a flowchart in a text-based report, although RTF cannot preserve every Draw editing feature.

What the FODG format is

FODG is the Flat OpenDocument Graphics format used by LibreOffice Draw and compatible OpenDocument graphics applications. It stores a drawing as readable XML in one file instead of using the ZIP-based package structure of an .odg file.

Draw uses FODG for flowcharts, organizational diagrams, mind maps, technical illustrations, connectors, shapes, text boxes, and other page-based graphics. You may encounter it when a diagram was created in LibreOffice Draw, saved in flat XML form for version control or automated processing, or exported by a document workflow that supports OpenDocument formats.

What the RTF format is

RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a text-document format supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, document-management systems, and many import libraries. It preserves common text attributes such as fonts, sizes, colors, alignment, lists, and basic paragraph formatting without requiring the original authoring application.

RTF is appropriate when the recipient needs a broadly readable text file or when a flowchart must be included in a report. It is not a native diagram format: RTF does not reliably retain Draw layers, connectors as editable objects, page geometry, animations, or application-specific shape properties.

How to actually convert FODG to RTF

Use the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software:

  1. Open the FODG-to-RTF converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .fodg file.
  3. Choose RTF as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .rtf file and open it in Word or LibreOffice Writer.

Check the result visually, especially if the source contains connectors, rotated labels, grouped objects, or multiple pages.

Convert with LibreOffice when layout control matters

LibreOffice Draw generally does not save a complete drawing directly as an editable RTF document. Use Writer as an intermediate document:

  1. Open diagram.fodg in LibreOffice Draw.
  2. For a visual copy, use File → Export and export the page as PNG. Set a sufficiently large output size for the intended page or screen resolution.
  3. Open LibreOffice Writer and choose Insert → Image to place the exported PNG.
  4. Choose File → Save As, select Rich Text Format (.rtf), and save the document.

For text that must remain editable, copy text from Draw into Writer instead of inserting an image. Recreate tables or lists in Writer as needed, then save with File → Save As → Rich Text Format (.rtf).

Quality and compatibility limitations

The most reliable visual conversion is a flowchart embedded as a high-resolution image in the RTF file. The diagram will look consistent across RTF readers, but its shapes and labels will no longer be independently editable. Copying Draw objects directly may produce an OLE object or a pasted image, and RTF readers differ in how they display such embedded content.

RTF has limited support for modern graphics and layout features. Gradients, transparency, SVG content, custom fonts, connector routing, layered objects, and precise page positioning may change or disappear. Embed fonts only when the chosen converter supports them; otherwise use common fonts and inspect line wrapping after conversion.
