A Draw template may need conversion when recipients cannot open the original diagram file but need its labels and notes in an editable document. RTF supports formatted text in common word processors, although it cannot preserve a mind map or flowchart as fully editable diagram objects.

What the STD format is

In the mind-maps and flowcharts context, .std is an OpenOffice.org or StarOffice Draw template. It stores reusable page layouts and drawing elements such as shapes, connectors, text boxes, arrows, and diagram formatting. LibreOffice Draw can usually open this format, and it is commonly encountered in older office-document collections or diagrams created with StarOffice and OpenOffice.org.

What the RTF format is

RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a text-document format supported by LibreOffice Writer, Microsoft Word, WordPad, and other word processors. It preserves basic formatting such as fonts, sizes, bold and italic text, paragraph alignment, tables, and embedded images. RTF is suitable for distributing the written content of a diagram, but it does not provide a standard editable representation for Draw connectors, shape relationships, layers, or page geometry.

How to convert STD to RTF

Using LibreOffice Draw and Writer

  1. Install LibreOffice and open the .std file in LibreOffice Draw. If it is recognized as a template, create or open the document generated from that template.
  2. In Draw, use Edit → Select All, then copy the selected objects.
  3. Open LibreOffice Writer and paste the content. Choose the normal paste option for editable text and objects; use Edit → Paste Special if you need to paste it as a single image.
  4. For a text-focused result, copy text boxes individually or rearrange the pasted content in Writer. For visual fidelity, export the drawing from Draw as PNG, SVG, or PDF, then insert a rendered image into the Writer document with Insert → Image.
  5. Save the Writer document with File → Save As, select Rich Text Format (.rtf), and confirm the format choice.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the .std file, choose RTF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

RTF is a poor target when the diagram must remain editable. LibreOffice may convert Draw objects into positioned objects, flatten them into an image, or omit unsupported template features. Connectors, fonts, page backgrounds, grouped objects, and multi-page layouts can change during conversion.

Before saving, check the RTF in the word processor used by the recipient. Embed a PNG or PDF-derived image when preserving the original appearance matters, and retain the original .std file for future diagram editing.
