What the STD format is

In the mind-map and flowchart context, STD is an Apache OpenOffice or StarOffice Draw template file. It stores reusable page settings, styles, shapes, connectors, text formatting, and other defaults for creating diagrams in Draw.

Apache OpenOffice Draw and older StarOffice releases create STD files. You may encounter them in template libraries, shared diagram folders, or archives containing legacy flowcharts and organizational charts. An STD file is normally a template rather than a finished drawing, so opening it may create a new untitled diagram based on the stored design.

What the EPS format is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a page-oriented graphics format used by print production, illustration, and older desktop-publishing applications. It can contain vector paths, text, raster images, and a preview image inside a bounded page area.

EPS is useful when a flowchart must scale without jagged edges or be placed into software that accepts PostScript artwork. It is less suitable for interactive editing than the original Draw file: connectors, layers, templates, and editable diagram semantics may be flattened during export.

How to actually convert STD to EPS

Use the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the .std file, choose EPS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .eps file. If the STD is a template, verify that the converted output contains the intended page and objects rather than only blank template defaults.

Use Apache OpenOffice Draw and Poppler

1. Open the STD file in Apache OpenOffice Draw. If it opens as a template, create or open the diagram that uses the template and save a working copy.
2. Export the drawing to PDF through File → Export as PDF, or use File → Export and select PDF.
3. Convert the PDF to EPS with Poppler's pdftops command:

pdftops -eps drawing.pdf drawing.eps

For a headless conversion on a system with LibreOffice or OpenOffice, create the PDF first:

soffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output drawing.std

Then run pdftops -eps output/drawing.pdf output/drawing.eps. The PDF intermediate retains vector lines and text more reliably than a screenshot or raster export.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Check the EPS page bounding box after conversion; PDF-to-EPS tools may use the full page rather than the diagram's visible bounds. Fonts not installed on the conversion system can be substituted, changing line breaks and label positions. Embed or convert critical text to outlines in a vector editor only when the receiving workflow does not require editable text.

Transparency, gradients, shadows, arrowheads, and some OpenOffice-specific effects may be simplified by the PDF-to-EPS step. Inspect connectors and small labels at high zoom, and retain the original STD or exported PDF because EPS does not preserve Draw's template behavior or diagram structure.
