STD templates are often created in StarOffice, OpenOffice.org Draw, or LibreOffice Draw, while DXF is required by CAD, technical drawing, and plotting software. Converting the file lets a flowchart or diagram be opened as editable vector geometry outside the original office application.
What the STD format is
In the mind maps and flowcharts category, STD normally means a StarOffice/OpenOffice.org Draw template. Draw uses these templates for reusable page layouts, flowcharts, organizational diagrams, connectors, text objects, shapes, and other vector elements.
You may encounter STD files in older StarOffice or OpenOffice.org document collections, shared diagram templates, and LibreOffice Draw workflows that retain the legacy template extension. An STD file is a template rather than a CAD exchange file, so it can contain page settings, master-page content, styles, and reusable design elements in addition to visible diagram objects.
What the DXF format is
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a text- or binary-based vector format developed for exchanging drawings with AutoCAD and other CAD applications. It represents entities such as lines, polylines, arcs, circles, points, layers, and sometimes text and dimensions.
DXF is useful when the converted flowchart must be imported into AutoCAD, QCAD, DraftSight, CNC or laser-cutting software, or a technical plotting workflow. It is less suitable than the original Draw format for preserving page design, embedded images, gradients, hyperlinks, or complex office-document styling.
How to actually convert STD to DXF
Desktop conversion with LibreOffice Draw and Inkscape
- Make a backup of the STD file before conversion.
- Open it in LibreOffice Draw using File → Open. If LibreOffice treats it as a template, create an editable document from the template and save a working copy as
diagram.odg. - Check every page and remove objects that should not enter the CAD drawing, such as page backgrounds, borders, guides, and decorative bitmap images.
- Use File → Export and select
SVG. SVG is the practical vector interchange step when the installed LibreOffice version does not offer DXF in its export list. - Open the SVG in Inkscape. Check the page scale, object positions, line widths, and text.
- Use File → Save a Copy, choose an AutoCAD DXF option such as
AutoCAD DXF R14, and save the result asdiagram.dxf. Select millimetres or the unit required by the destination CAD application. - Open the DXF in the target CAD program and verify scale, layers, line types, text, and the position of the drawing origin.
Some LibreOffice Draw versions expose a direct DXF export option under File → Save As or File → Export. If that option is available, select the AutoCAD DXF format directly; otherwise use the SVG-to-DXF route above.
Online conversion
You can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the STD file, choose DXF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Open the result in a CAD viewer before using it for manufacturing or precision drafting.
Quality and compatibility limits
- DXF generally preserves basic lines, curves, polylines, and some text, but STD template features such as master pages, page breaks, styles, shadows, gradients, hyperlinks, and embedded images may be discarded.
- Connectors may become ordinary line segments rather than intelligent flowchart connectors. Arrowheads, grouped objects, and rotated text should be checked manually.
- Text can change because DXF readers depend on installed fonts. Converting text to paths in Inkscape preserves its appearance but makes the lettering harder to edit and increases the number of entities.
- STD documents can contain multiple pages, whereas DXF commonly represents one model-space drawing. Export pages separately if the receiving application cannot handle multiple layouts.
- DXF has no universally consistent unit declaration. Set the intended unit during export and confirm a known dimension after import; a 25.4-fold error usually indicates an inch-versus-millimetre mismatch.
- For cutting, machining, or dimensionally accurate drafting, inspect duplicate lines, open contours, very short segments, and spline conversions before sending the file to equipment.
