VSDM files are Microsoft Visio diagrams, while RTF is a document format supported by many word processors. Converting a VSDM file is useful when the recipient needs the diagram’s written content in an editable, broadly compatible document rather than the original Visio drawing.
What the VSDM format is
VSDM is Microsoft Visio’s macro-enabled drawing format. It stores flowcharts, organization charts, network diagrams, process maps, mind maps, shapes, connectors, page layouts, and embedded VBA macros. Microsoft Visio creates VSDM files when a drawing contains or is saved with macro support.
You may encounter VSDM files as attachments from Visio users, exports from business-process and diagramming workflows, or older document archives. Because macros can contain executable VBA code, open an untrusted VSDM file with macros disabled and scan it before enabling any content.
What the RTF format is
RTF is Rich Text Format, a text-document format supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many document-management systems. It preserves common text attributes such as fonts, sizes, bold and italic styling, colors, paragraphs, and basic tables without requiring the original authoring application.
RTF is appropriate when the destination system accepts documents but not Visio files, or when you need searchable and editable labels, notes, and explanatory text. It is not a diagram-preservation format: page geometry, connectors, shape behavior, layers, data graphics, and interactive Visio features generally cannot be represented in RTF.
How to actually convert VSDM to RTF
Using the built-in online converter
- Open the VSDM-to-RTF converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.vsdmfile, selectRTFas the output format, and start the conversion. - Download the resulting
.rtffile and open it in Word, LibreOffice Writer, or another RTF-compatible editor. - Check the document for missing labels, changed paragraph order, and lost formatting before sharing or archiving it.
Using Microsoft Visio
Microsoft Visio is the most reliable desktop application for interpreting VSDM content. Open the file in Visio, then check File → Save As and look for Rich Text Format (*.rtf) in the file-type list. If that option is available in your Visio edition, select it, choose a destination, and save.
If Visio does not offer RTF export, select the required shape text and use Home → Copy, then paste it into Word or LibreOffice Writer and save the document as .rtf through File → Save As. For a large diagram, export or print the drawing to PDF separately and place that PDF or an image alongside the RTF, because copying text alone will not reproduce the layout.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion output depends on what the converter can extract from the Visio drawing. RTF normally retains textual content more successfully than visual structure; grouped shapes, text inside connectors, hidden layers, comments, custom properties, hyperlinks, and macro behavior may be omitted or reordered.
RTF does not preserve VSDM macros. The output is therefore safer to distribute as a text document, but it cannot be reopened as an editable Visio diagram. Keep the original .vsdm file when diagram editing, exact layout, or macro functionality may be needed later.
