What the VSDM format is

VSDM is Microsoft Visio's macro-enabled drawing format. It stores flowcharts, process diagrams, organizational charts, network diagrams, shapes, connectors, page settings, and potentially VBA macros. Microsoft Visio creates and opens VSDM files; they commonly appear when a diagram is saved with macro support enabled.

A VSDM file can contain multiple pages and editable vector objects. Its macros and interactive behavior are specific to Visio and cannot be represented in a JPG image.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster image format supported by web browsers, office applications, image viewers, and most operating systems. It is suitable for sharing a static flowchart in email, presentations, reports, and web pages.

JPG files are usually smaller than rendered document files, but JPEG compression can blur thin connectors, small labels, and sharp text. JPG stores a visual snapshot, not editable diagram objects, pages, layers, links, or macros.

Choose a sufficiently large output size or resolution when the diagram contains small text. A low-resolution JPG can make labels unreadable even when the original VSDM remains sharp. For diagrams intended for printing or repeated editing, PDF or SVG generally preserves lines and text better than JPG, but those formats are different from the requested image output.

JPG has no transparency support in the usual workflow, so transparent or unfilled Visio regions may appear against a solid background. Review page boundaries, cropped content, text rotation, and connector visibility after conversion, especially for diagrams wider than a standard page.
