What the MERMAID format is
In the mind-map and flowchart context, a MERMAID file is a plain-text Mermaid diagram definition, commonly saved with .mmd or .mermaid. The text describes flowcharts, mind maps, sequence diagrams, class diagrams, state diagrams, and related visuals; a Mermaid renderer turns that source into an image or document.
Mermaid files are created or edited in Mermaid Live Editor, Visual Studio Code with a Mermaid extension, Obsidian, GitHub-compatible Markdown workflows, and other documentation tools. Opening the file in a text editor shows code rather than the rendered diagram.
What the JPG format is
JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster image format supported by browsers, office applications, phones, image viewers, and most publishing systems. It is suitable for sharing a finished flowchart or mind map where editable Mermaid source is not required.
JPG files are usually smaller than uncompressed images and work well for diagrams containing gradients or photographic elements. JPEG compression can blur small labels and does not preserve transparency, so it is less suitable than PNG or SVG for dense diagrams with fine text.
How to convert MERMAID to JPG
Convert online without installing software
- Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.mmdor.mermaidfile. - Choose JPG as the output format and start the conversion.
- Download the rendered image and check that labels, arrows, and diagram boundaries are visible.
This process renders the Mermaid source before creating the JPG; it does not merely rename the file extension.
Convert locally with Mermaid CLI and ImageMagick
Install the Mermaid command-line renderer with npm:
npm install -g @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli
Render the source to SVG, which preserves the diagram as vector artwork:
mmdc -i diagram.mmd -o diagram.svg
Convert the SVG to a white-background JPG with ImageMagick:
magick -background white diagram.svg -density 300 -quality 92 diagram.jpg
Use the same commands with diagram.mermaid if that is the source filename. The -density 300 setting renders a larger raster image before compression, improving the readability of small labels.
Export through a graphical Mermaid editor
Open the source in Mermaid Live Editor or another Mermaid-enabled editor, render the diagram, and choose Export or Download → PNG. If the editor does not offer JPG directly, convert the exported PNG with an image editor using Export → JPEG and set quality around 90–95 percent.
Quality and compatibility considerations
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent Mermaid backgrounds become black, white, or another selected background during conversion. Set a white background explicitly when the image will be placed in documents or printed.
JPEG compression is lossy. For flowcharts with thin lines, large canvases, or small text, use a high-quality setting and sufficient output dimensions; PNG is often clearer, while SVG is preferable when the recipient supports vector graphics and requires unlimited scaling.
Rendering can differ between tools because Mermaid versions, installed fonts, security settings, and diagram configuration affect layout. Keep the original .mmd or .mermaid file alongside the JPG if later edits may be needed.
