Flowchart and mind-map files created in LibreOffice Draw may need to be placed in a word-processing document that accepts RTF. Converting them to RTF is mainly a way to share the diagram with older editors; the result usually contains the drawing as an embedded image rather than editable flowchart objects.
What the ODG format is
ODG is the OpenDocument Graphics format used for vector drawings, diagrams, mind maps, flowcharts, schematics, labels, and page layouts. LibreOffice Draw and Apache OpenOffice Draw create ODG files, and the format is also encountered when diagrams are exchanged among OpenDocument applications.
An ODG file stores drawing objects such as shapes, connectors, text boxes, lines, grouped elements, fills, and styles. These objects remain individually editable when the file is opened in Draw.
What the RTF format is
RTF, or Rich Text Format, stores formatted text and can contain basic images, tables, fonts, colors, and paragraph settings. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many document-management systems can open it.
RTF is useful when a recipient needs a broadly compatible document without the original drawing application. It is not a native diagram format: it does not preserve ODG layers, connectors, shape relationships, drawing styles, or independently editable flowchart objects reliably.
How to convert ODG to RTF
Use the built-in online converter
- Open the ODG-to-RTF converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.odgfile. - Start the conversion and download the generated
.rtffile.
This option requires no installed software. Open the result in an RTF-compatible editor and check the diagram size, text, and page breaks.
Use LibreOffice for a local conversion
- Open the ODG file in LibreOffice Draw.
- Select the complete drawing with
Ctrl+A, then copy it withCtrl+C. - Open LibreOffice Writer and create a new document.
- Paste the drawing with
Ctrl+V. If prompted, choose a picture or enhanced-metafile paste option to keep the layout intact. - Save the Writer document through File → Save As, select
Rich Text Format (.rtf), and confirm the format choice.
If the diagram must remain editable as text, copy its labels separately into Writer and recreate the shapes there; an RTF export cannot preserve the full ODG drawing model.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Embedding the entire diagram as one image usually preserves positions, arrows, colors, and typography better than rebuilding it with RTF paragraphs. It also makes the diagram non-editable and may increase the RTF file size.
Check fonts on the target computer, because missing fonts can change label wrapping and diagram dimensions. Large ODG pages may be scaled to fit the Writer page, and transparent fills, gradients, connectors, or unusual fonts may render differently. For archival fidelity, keep the original ODG alongside the RTF; use PDF when fixed visual reproduction matters more than RTF compatibility.
