What the VSTX format is
VSTX is the XML-based Microsoft Visio drawing-template format used for reusable mind maps, flowcharts, process diagrams, organizational charts, and other vector drawings. Microsoft Visio creates VSTX files when a diagram is saved as a template rather than as a completed drawing.
A template can contain page settings, themes, connector behavior, master shapes, styles, and example content. Opening it in Visio normally creates a new drawing based on that template. Unlike a DOC file, VSTX is designed to preserve diagram structure: shapes, connectors, layers, and editing relationships.
What the DOC format is
DOC is the binary Word 97–2003 document format. It is suitable for letters, reports, printed diagram documentation, and files that must work with older versions of Microsoft Word or systems that do not accept newer DOCX files.
DOC can contain pasted Visio objects or static images, but it does not natively preserve every Visio template feature. A diagram inserted as an image remains visually stable but cannot be edited as individual shapes in Word. A pasted Visio object may remain editable only when the receiving Word version and Visio integration support that embedded object.
How to convert VSTX to DOC
Using Microsoft Visio and Word
- Open the
.vstxfile in Microsoft Visio. If Visio opens a new drawing from the template, verify that the required page and diagram content are present. - Save a working copy with File → Save As and choose
Visio Drawing (*.vsdx). This preserves the editable Visio version before placing content in Word. - Select the required diagram page or shapes in Visio and choose Home → Copy. For a complete page, use Edit → Select All before copying.
- Open Microsoft Word, create a document, and choose Home → Paste → Paste Special. Select Picture for reliable appearance, or choose a Visio object option when shape-level editing is required and supported.
- Check page size, orientation, line weights, fonts, connector positions, and diagram resolution. Use Word’s layout controls to fit the pasted content to the printable area.
- Choose File → Save As, select
Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc), and save the result. Reopen the DOC file in Word to verify that the pasted diagram and surrounding text remain intact.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the VSTX file, select DOC as the output format when available, start the conversion, and download the resulting document. Review the output because automated conversion may flatten the Visio page into an image or omit template-only elements.
Quality and compatibility limitations
There is no direct one-to-one mapping between Visio’s structured diagram objects and the older DOC format. Themes, custom fonts, layers, hyperlinks, data graphics, page backgrounds, and dynamic connectors may change or disappear. Converting a template may also produce a blank or partially populated document if the VSTX contains reusable definitions rather than a finished diagram.
For a fixed visual result, paste or export the diagram as a high-resolution image before saving as DOC. For future diagram editing, retain the original VSTX and the intermediate VSDX; the DOC copy should be treated as a presentation or document-sharing version rather than the source file.
