Convert ZARGO to PDF

People usually need a PDF when an ArgoUML diagram must be printed, submitted, archived, or shared with someone who does not have ArgoUML. Because a .zargo file is a UML project rather than a paginated document, the normal process is to open its diagrams and print or export them as PDF.

What the ZARGO format is

.zargo is the native project format used by ArgoUML, an open-source UML modeling application. It stores a UML model and its diagram information, including class, use-case, sequence, activity, state, deployment, and collaboration diagrams.

A project can contain several diagrams, and it does not define one automatic page sequence for a PDF. PDF output therefore normally consists of one page or file per selected diagram, followed by optional merging. Keep the original .zargo file because PDF does not preserve the editable UML model.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves page dimensions, text placement, vector lines, and print layout across operating systems. Recipients can view and print it without installing ArgoUML, but PDF is primarily a presentation format and is not a replacement for the source project.

How to create a PDF from ZARGO

Print from ArgoUML

1. Install an ArgoUML version compatible with the project and its required Java runtime. Open the project with File → Open Project, or use the equivalent open command in that release.
2. Select the diagram in ArgoUML's project browser or model navigator.
3. Use File → Print or the available print command. Select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, Save as PDF in macOS, or Print to File with PDF output on Linux.
4. Set paper size, orientation, margins, scale, and page range. Landscape orientation and larger paper usually suit wide class, deployment, and sequence diagrams.
5. Check the print preview before saving. Use a custom scale or tiled pages if shrinking the diagram makes labels unreadable.
6. Save a descriptive filename such as class-diagram.pdf. Repeat the process for every diagram required in the deliverable.

Export a vector diagram before making the PDF

Some ArgoUML releases provide diagram graphics export through a command such as File → Export Graphics or File → Export Diagram. If SVG or PostScript is available, use it instead of a raster format. Menu names and supported formats vary by release.

Open an exported SVG in Inkscape and choose File → Save a Copy, selecting PDF. The equivalent command is:

inkscape diagram.svg --export-type=pdf --export-filename=diagram.pdf

SVG and PostScript retain lines and text as vector content, producing sharper results at different sizes than PNG or GIF. If the ArgoUML version exports only PNG, convert that image to PDF with a graphics or document application; the PDF will retain the image's original resolution and will not become genuinely vector-based.

Use an online converter only after export

Generic online services normally do not understand the ArgoUML project structure in a .zargo file. They may reject it or produce no useful document. If ArgoUML has exported an SVG, a reputable service such as CloudConvert or Convertio can convert that SVG to PDF, but check the resulting page size and fonts. Do not upload confidential models or source code unless the service's retention and privacy terms are acceptable; local printing or Inkscape avoids that exposure.

Combine diagrams into one PDF

Create a PDF for each diagram, then merge the files with a desktop PDF application or a local utility such as:

pdfunite class.pdf sequence.pdf use-case.pdf project-diagrams.pdf

Review the merged file for page order, clipping, missing fonts, and readable labels.

Quality and compatibility limits

ArgoUML releases differ in Java requirements, printing behavior, and export commands. If the project does not open, make a backup copy and try the Java runtime supported by that ArgoUML release rather than modifying the original file.

Very large diagrams can be split across pages, clipped at the margins, or reduced until text is illegible. Use print preview, adjust the scale and paper size, or export SVG/PostScript when exact line and text quality matters. Fonts unavailable on the conversion system can also change text metrics or cause substitutions, so inspect the final PDF before distributing it.
