A program that accepts only plain .txt files may require an MMD document to be saved without Markdown formatting. Converting it also makes MultiMarkdown notes easier to open in basic editors, index, or archive as universally readable text.

What the MMD format is

In the Documents category, .mmd commonly identifies a MultiMarkdown document. It is a plain-text markup format derived from Markdown, with syntax for headings, emphasis, links, tables, footnotes, citations, metadata, and other document features. MultiMarkdown and Markdown-compatible editors create or edit these files; code editors and ordinary text editors can also open them.

An MMD file already contains readable characters, but its markup remains visible. For example, **Heading** contains asterisks that represent bold formatting rather than displaying bold text in a plain editor.

What the TXT format is

.txt is a generic plain-text format with no embedded fonts, styles, images, layout, or executable content. It is supported by Notepad, TextEdit, command-line tools, document-management systems, and most operating systems.

TXT is useful when the receiving application needs unformatted characters, when long-term readability matters more than layout, or when reducing a document to its textual content. The conversion can either preserve MMD markup or remove it, depending on the method used.

How to convert MMD to TXT

Save the source as TXT without changing its contents

  1. Open the .mmd file in a plain-text editor such as Notepad, Notepad++, TextEdit in plain-text mode, or Visual Studio Code.
  2. Choose File → Save As.
  3. Enter a filename ending in .txt, select UTF-8 encoding if the editor offers an encoding choice, and save.

This method changes the extension and preserves Markdown or MultiMarkdown markers such as #, **, link destinations, table separators, and footnote syntax.

Remove MMD markup with Pandoc

Install Pandoc, then run this command in a terminal from the folder containing the source file:

pandoc input.mmd -f markdown -t plain -o output.txt

The -t plain option produces readable plain text instead of retaining most formatting syntax. Use a suitable input encoding when necessary; modern UTF-8 files normally require no additional option.

Convert without installing software

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the MMD file, select TXT as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file.

Quality and compatibility

TXT cannot represent document structure or visual features directly. Headings may become ordinary lines, tables may lose alignment, images are omitted, and links may appear as visible URLs or simplified link text. Footnotes, citations, metadata, and embedded HTML can also be altered or discarded when markup is stripped.

Use UTF-8 to preserve accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and symbols. If the destination system requires Windows line endings, convert the saved file to CRLF; Unix-like systems generally use LF. Review the output when the source contains tables, code blocks, footnotes, or Unicode characters.
