Free online MHT to TXT converter

Some legacy applications, command-line tools, and archival systems accept only plain-text files, so a saved web page in MHT may need to be reduced to readable text. The resulting TXT file is easier to edit, search, script, share, and store than a MIME web archive.

What the MHT format is

MHT, also called MHTML, is a MIME multipart/related archive that stores a web page and its related resources in one file. It normally uses the .mht or .mhtml extension and can contain HTML, inline images, CSS, fonts, and attachments encoded with Base64 or quoted-printable data.

Internet Explorer and Microsoft applications commonly created MHT files with File → Save As → Web Archive, single file (*.mht). Documentation systems, email software, browsers, and other legacy Windows applications may also create or open them. Modern browsers do not all provide full MHTML support, so an MHT file may be encountered mainly as a legacy web-page archive.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text file containing characters without HTML markup, visual formatting, images, embedded files, executable scripts, or page layout. It works with Notepad, code editors, command-line tools, text-processing scripts, and most operating systems.

A TXT copy is usually smaller than the original archive and avoids compatibility problems caused by obsolete web features. It retains text rather than the original page structure.

How to convert an MHT file

Use 101convert.com when you want a conversion without installing software:

1. Open the MHT-to-TXT converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .mht or .mhtml file.
3. Select TXT as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .txt file and open it in Notepad or another plain-text editor.

Do not upload confidential, personal, or regulated material to any service unless its handling policy meets your requirements.

For a local conversion, use a browser or application that can open MHTML:

1. Open the MHT file in a compatible installed browser or document editor. Support varies by application and version.
2. Select the page content with Ctrl+A, copy it with Ctrl+C, and paste it into Notepad or another plain-text editor.
3. Choose File → Save As, give the file a .txt extension, select UTF-8 as the encoding when available, and save it.

This local method copies the browser’s rendered text rather than parsing the MIME archive directly. It can therefore include visible navigation, headers, footers, menus, and other page elements that are not part of the main article text.

Some desktop document editors can open MHT files and provide File → Save As with a Text (.txt) option. If the editor offers an encoding choice, select UTF-8 for accented characters and non-Latin scripts.

Conversion limitations

• Images, colors, fonts, layout, visual table structure, page breaks, and attachments cannot be represented in ordinary TXT.
• Hyperlinks become ordinary text and are no longer clickable.
• Tables may collapse into lines whose spacing differs between editors.
• CSS-generated text, hidden elements, scripts, form controls, and some HTML entities may be omitted or converted differently by different parsers.
• Character corruption can result from a mismatched source encoding, especially in older archives that declare Windows-1252 or another legacy charset. Check the output for mojibake and select the correct encoding if the conversion tool provides that option.
• Password-protected, damaged, or nonstandard MIME archives may not open. Keep the original MHT file if exact page preservation or later resource extraction is required.
