Free online MHT to ODT converter

Some applications and document workflows cannot edit or accept an MHT web archive but do support OpenDocument Text files. Converting the archive to ODT makes its text and page elements editable in LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, or another compatible word processor.

What the MHT format is

MHT, also called MHTML, is a MIME multipart archive that stores an HTML page and included resources—such as images, stylesheets, and other files—in one .mht or .mhtml file. It is used for saved web pages, exported reports, help documentation, email attachments, and web-capture archives.

Internet Explorer and legacy Microsoft Edge supported creating MHT files through Save page as → Web archive, single file. Microsoft Word and some documentation or capture applications can also create them. MHT is intended to reproduce a page for browser-style viewing, not to preserve a structured word-processing document; its content may include tables, scripts, positioned elements, and browser-specific CSS.

What the ODT format is

ODT (OpenDocument Text) is an open XML-based word-processing format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, and other office applications. An ODT package can contain editable paragraphs, styles, lists, tables, images, headers, footers, and page settings.

ODT is appropriate when the converted content must be revised, annotated, printed, or stored in an office format without depending on a web browser. It is not a visual snapshot: its layout is reconstructed as a word-processing document and can differ from the source page.

Convert MHT to ODT with 101convert

1. Open the MHT-to-ODT converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the .mht or .mhtml file on your device.
3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
4. Download the resulting .odt file and open it in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible editor.

This option converts the file without installing desktop software and is available for free. Review the downloaded document before removing the original MHT archive, particularly when it contains images, forms, or complex tables.

Convert with Microsoft Word

1. Open Word and select File → Open → Browse.
2. Select the MHT file. If it is not listed, change the file filter to All files.
3. After Word imports the page, select File → Save As.
4. Choose OpenDocument Text (*.odt) as the file type and save the file.

Support for opening MHT and exporting ODT varies by Word version. If Word rejects the archive or omits its resources, use 101convert or an MHTML-capable application instead.

Use LibreOffice with an HTML intermediate file

LibreOffice versions do not all provide reliable MHTML import. If the application can open the archive directly, use File → Open, inspect the imported page, then use File → Save As and choose ODF Text Document (.odt). If it shows MIME headers or fails to open, do not merely rename the extension.

As a desktop fallback, open the MHT in an application that supports MHTML, save or export the page as ordinary HTML, and open that HTML file in Writer. Use File → Save As in Writer and select ODF Text Document (.odt). Saving HTML as a complete page may create a separate resource folder; keep that folder with the HTML file until the import is complete.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Pixel-identical reproduction is not guaranteed. Complex CSS positioning, floating elements, nested tables, page breaks, and browser-specific fonts commonly need manual correction.
• Embedded images usually transfer as document images. Resources referenced externally, but not included in the MHT package, may be missing.
• JavaScript, videos, interactive forms, dynamic page behavior, and some external links generally do not remain functional ODT content.
• Check fonts, special characters, image placement, table widths, headers, footers, and pagination after conversion.
• Opening an untrusted MHT can expose active web content or unsafe links. Treat unknown archives cautiously and keep the original file as a backup.
