Free online SPV to ODT converter

SPSS Viewer files need conversion when output tables, charts, and statistical results must be edited in a word processor or shared as an OpenDocument file. Converting an .spv file to .odt usually requires exporting the SPSS output first, because SPSS does not normally save Viewer documents directly as ODT.

What the SPV format is

.spv is the proprietary output-file format used by IBM SPSS Statistics Viewer. SPSS creates it when you run analyses; it stores the Output Viewer tree, tables, charts, notes, warnings, and other generated results. You encounter SPV files when receiving statistical reports from an SPSS user or reopening saved analysis output.

An SPV file is not the original dataset and usually cannot be edited like a word-processing document. The source data normally remains in files such as .sav, while the SPV contains the analysis results and their presentation structure.

What the ODT format is

.odt is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, and other compatible applications. It is suitable for editing reports, adding commentary, applying styles, printing, and long-term document exchange.

ODT is an open, XML-based format that avoids dependence on a single office application. It can contain paragraphs, tables, images, page layouts, headers, footers, and basic charts, although some SPSS-specific output features may not transfer exactly.

How to convert SPV to ODT

Using SPSS and LibreOffice

1. Open the .spv file in IBM SPSS Statistics.
2. In the Output Viewer, select the objects to export, or leave the output unselected to export the complete report.
3. Choose File → Export.
4. Select Word/RTF as the export type. Choose the option for all visible or all output objects as needed, then save the file as .doc or .rtf.
5. Open the exported file in LibreOffice Writer.
6. Choose File → Save As, select ODF Text Document (.odt), and save.
7. Review page breaks, table widths, fonts, chart placement, and footnotes before distributing the ODT file.

If the SPSS installation does not offer Word/RTF export, export the output as HTML or PDF instead. HTML is generally more suitable for creating an editable ODT document; PDF is better for preserving visual appearance but often requires manual reconstruction of tables and text.

Quality and compatibility limitations

SPSS pivot tables can require manual resizing after conversion because column widths, merged cells, fonts, and page orientation are interpreted differently by Writer. Charts may transfer as static images, so their underlying data and SPSS editing controls are not preserved.

For an editable report, export from SPSS to Word/RTF or HTML before saving as ODT. For an exact visual record, keep the original SPV and export a PDF alongside the ODT; the ODT should not be treated as a lossless archive of the SPSS output.
