Free online SPV to ODS converter

SPSS creates SPV files for statistical output, but many spreadsheet applications cannot open them directly. Converting the output to ODS makes tables available for editing in LibreOffice Calc and other OpenDocument-compatible software.

What the SPV format is

SPV is the native output format of IBM SPSS Statistics. SPSS creates it in the Output Viewer when you run analyses, and it can contain pivot tables, charts, statistical notes, warnings, and command output.

An SPV file is an analysis-results document rather than a spreadsheet containing the original records. The source data normally remains in an SPSS file such as .sav. SPV files are commonly encountered when researchers, universities, survey teams, or statistical departments share SPSS results.

What the ODS format is

ODS is the OpenDocument Spreadsheet format used by LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and other compatible applications. It supports worksheets, formulas, cell formatting, charts, and multiple sheets in a standard ZIP-based document structure.

ODS is useful when the converted results must be edited, filtered, annotated, archived in an open format, or shared with users who do not have SPSS. It is also more suitable than SPV for spreadsheet workflows.

How to actually convert SPV to ODS

Using IBM SPSS Statistics and LibreOffice

1. Open the .spv file in IBM SPSS Statistics Output Viewer.
2. Select the required output objects, or leave the output unselected to export the complete viewer document.
3. Choose File → Export.
4. Set the export type to an Excel format such as Excel 2007 and later (*.xlsx). Choose the option for all visible output or selected objects, depending on what you need.
5. Save the exported .xlsx file.
6. Open the file in LibreOffice Calc.
7. Choose File → Save As, select ODF Spreadsheet (.ods), and confirm the format choice.

This two-stage route is generally the practical desktop method because SPSS exports viewer objects to Excel, while LibreOffice converts the resulting spreadsheet to ODS.

Quality and compatibility limitations

SPV output is not raw tabular data, so conversion may reproduce only the visible tables and their formatting. Charts, footnotes, nested pivot-table layouts, significance markers, page breaks, and SPSS-specific styles can change or be omitted.

After saving the ODS file, check merged cells, column widths, decimal separators, missing-value labels, formulas, chart placement, and multiple worksheets. If you need to edit or recompute the underlying observations, obtain the original .sav dataset and rerun the analysis in SPSS; converting an SPV file cannot restore data that was not included in the output.
