Free online EPUB to ODT converter

An ebook may need to be converted when its text must be revised in LibreOffice Writer, supplied as an editable manuscript, or placed in an ODT-based office workflow. The result is editable document content, not an exact reproduction of an e-reader’s display.

EPUB format

EPUB is an open, ZIP-based ebook container format used by publishers, authors, libraries, and reading applications such as Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Thorium Reader, and Calibre. A typical EPUB contains XHTML or HTML chapter files, CSS, images, metadata, a navigation document, and a table of contents.

Most EPUB books are reflowable: the reading application changes line length, page flow, and font presentation for the screen and the reader’s settings. EPUB can also contain fixed-layout pages, comics, media, scripts, or other features that do not translate cleanly into a word-processing document.

ODT format

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used primarily by LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer. It is an open XML-based package that stores editable text, paragraph and character styles, headings, lists, tables, images, comments, page settings, and other office-document content.

ODT is useful when recipients need to edit text without relying on Microsoft Word formats. LibreOffice can open an ODT file, preserve its editable styles, and later save or export copies as DOCX, PDF, HTML, and other formats.

Convert the EPUB file

Use the EPUB-to-ODT converter on 101convert.com when a converted file is needed without installing software. Upload the .epub file, select ODT as the output format if prompted, start the conversion, and download the generated .odt file. Open the result in LibreOffice Writer before distributing or editing it further.

For local conversion, Calibre can create a DOCX intermediate file, which LibreOffice can save as ODT:

1. In Calibre, use Add books to import the EPUB.
2. Select the title and choose Convert books → Convert individually.
3. Set DOCX as the output format and run the conversion. Calibre does not normally provide ODT as a direct output format.
4. Open the resulting .docx file in LibreOffice Writer.
5. Choose File → Save As, select ODF Text Document (.odt), and save the file.

For batch or scripted work, Pandoc can convert supported EPUB files directly to ODT: pandoc input.epub -o output.odt. Review its output in LibreOffice, especially when the EPUB uses custom CSS or complex navigation.

Formatting and compatibility checks

Normal paragraphs, headings, emphasis, lists, hyperlinks, and inline images usually convert well when the EPUB has clean XHTML structure. Reader-specific choices such as font size, night mode, screen width, margins, and line spacing are not stored as transferable document layout.

Inspect the converted file before relying on it. Check chapter order and heading levels, image placement, tables, footnotes or endnotes, table-of-contents links, page breaks, and paragraph styles. Reapply page margins, headers, footers, and print-oriented styles in LibreOffice as needed.

Fixed-layout EPUBs, comics, multi-column textbooks, positioned elements, drop caps, embedded fonts, audio, video, JavaScript, and interactive content may be flattened, omitted, substituted, or require manual reconstruction. Protected EPUB files from stores or library services generally cannot be processed by ordinary converters unless the provider supplies an authorized unprotected copy; format conversion does not grant redistribution rights.
