Convert EPUB to MP4

Video platforms, signage players, and presentation systems often accept MP4 but cannot open an EPUB. The conversion therefore creates a timed video from rendered book pages or slides, optionally synchronized with narration and captions.

EPUB and MP4 are different kinds of files

EPUB is the W3C ebook format used by publishers, libraries, and reading apps such as Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Thorium Reader, Adobe Digital Editions, and Calibre. An EPUB is usually a ZIP-based package containing XHTML or HTML chapters, CSS, images, fonts, metadata, and navigation files; most EPUBs are reflowable, so text changes size and line breaks according to the reader's screen and font settings.

Some EPUBs use fixed layouts or include audio through EPUB Media Overlays, but an EPUB still is not a video timeline. Its internal links, selectable text, reflow controls, bookmarks, semantic structure, and screen-reader navigation do not transfer to an MP4.

MP4 is a multimedia container for timed video, audio, and metadata. For broad playback support, use H.264 video with AAC audio; this combination works on current phones, browsers, TVs, and social platforms. MP4 is appropriate for a page slideshow, a narrated excerpt, or a fixed-layout presentation, not as a replacement for an accessible ebook.

Create a page-based MP4

1. Open the EPUB in Calibre or Thorium Reader and check chapter order, images, fonts, and footnotes. Do not process DRM-protected books or books whose licence does not permit video redistribution.
2. In Calibre, select the title and use Convert books → Convert individually to export a PDF. Choose a page size appropriate to the intended video layout. A portrait PDF suits phone-oriented video; a landscape layout reduces empty borders in a 16:9 project.
3. Render the PDF pages to images. Poppler can create PNG files with pdftoppm -png -scale-to-x 1920 -scale-to-y -1 book.pdf page. This creates files such as page-1.png and page-2.png.
4. Import the PNG sequence into Shotcut, Kdenlive, DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, or another video editor. Set the project to 1920×1080 for standard landscape video or 1080×1920 for vertical phone video.
5. Set each page duration according to its reading load. A dense full page usually needs more than 8–15 seconds; for narrated content, keep each visual on screen until its corresponding audio finishes. Splitting long pages into smaller slides is usually more readable than shrinking a complete page.
6. Add narration and export H.264/AAC MP4. Use 25 or 30 fps, AAC at 128–192 kb/s, and a high-quality H.264 setting such as CRF 18–20. Static text is not helped by a high frame rate; duplicate frames only provide compatibility with video players.

For a fixed ten-second duration per numbered image, FFmpeg can create a basic 1080p video:

This command creates video only. Add narration and time page changes in an editor, or use an FFmpeg concat file with explicit per-image durations.

Add narration and captions

If the purpose is spoken audio rather than visible pages, create an M4A, AAC, or MP3 file instead; MP4 adds no benefit without video. To make narration, convert the EPUB to text in Calibre, proofread the extracted text, then use a text-to-speech tool that can save audio. Balabolka can save speech to WAV or MP3 when supplied supported text and an installed voice. Windows Narrator is a screen reader, not a reliable EPUB-to-audio export tool.

Correct text-to-speech pronunciation, names, headings, punctuation, and pauses before final export. Keep an .srt caption file beside the video for platforms that accept sidecar captions; burn captions into the image when playback must work on systems without caption-track support.

Online and compatibility options

For a short, non-confidential, DRM-free excerpt, CloudConvert can convert EPUB to PDF, and Canva or Adobe Express can import PDF pages, add narration, and export MP4. Check current upload limits, retention terms, and privacy settings before uploading unpublished manuscripts or licensed books. Online services that advertise a direct conversion generally make a page-image slideshow; they cannot preserve ebook navigation or reflow.

Embedded fonts may be substituted during PDF rendering, and fixed-layout pages can be clipped or scaled incorrectly. Inspect the PDF and final MP4 at the target screen size. Portrait pages placed in a 16:9 frame produce side bars; stretching them makes text and illustrations distorted.

Use H.264 with yuv420p when the file must play on older hardware. H.265/HEVC and AV1 can reduce size, but their support is less consistent in browsers, TVs, and editing software. Retain the original EPUB for readers who need adjustable text, searchable content, accessible navigation, or screen-reader support.
