Convert CED to MP4

A camera or legacy application may leave a .ced file that current players, editors, phones, or sharing services cannot open. Conversion is possible only when the file contains an actual video stream; many CED files are indexes or metadata that require the associated recording.

What the CED format is

CED is not a single standardized video format. Different camera manufacturers and applications use the extension for proprietary video data, project files, indexes, or metadata. Some JVC Everio users find tiny CED files on an SD card when the card filesystem, recording state, or camera software prevented normal clips from being created. A CED file of only a few kilobytes is usually not a video container.

Do not rename recording.ced to recording.mp4; changing the extension does not change the file structure. Check the same card or folder for associated .MTS, .MOD, .MOV, or .AVI files. A CED index may refer to one of those recordings, but it cannot replace a missing recording.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a widely supported container used by browsers, phones, televisions, media players, editors, and video-sharing services. H.264 video with AAC audio is a common compatibility target; H.265/HEVC can produce smaller files at similar quality but may not play on older devices.

MP4 is not automatically smaller or better than the source. File size and quality depend on the selected video codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings.

How to check and convert the file

Check whether CED contains video

Use MediaInfo or FFprobe before attempting conversion. Run:

ffprobe -hide_banner recording.ced

A convertible file normally reports a video stream, duration, dimensions, frame rate, and codec, and may report an audio stream. If FFprobe reports only data, metadata, an unknown format, or no streams, the CED file itself is not directly convertible. Keep private recordings offline until you know what the file contains.

Convert a recognized video with FFmpeg

If FFprobe identifies a usable video stream, create a broadly compatible MP4 with:

ffmpeg -i recording.ced -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart recording.mp4

-crf controls quality rather than a fixed bitrate; values from about 18 to 23 are common, with lower values producing larger files. The optional audio mapping allows the command to work when the source has no audio. If FFmpeg cannot identify the file, do not force a conversion by guessing the format.

Use a desktop converter

HandBrake is a suitable graphical option when it can open the file. Select File → Open Source, choose the CED file or the associated video clip, select a matching preset such as Fast 1080p30, set the container to MP4, use H.264 (x264) and AAC, choose a destination, and select Start Encode. HandBrake cannot decode a proprietary CED variant that FFmpeg and the originating application cannot read.

If the CED file came from a camera or specialist application, use that product's import or export function, for example File → Export → Video or Share → MP4. If CED is only an index or project file, open the associated source clips in that software and export those clips instead. On macOS, iMovie may import the actual supported .MTS or .MOD recording, but that does not demonstrate that iMovie converted a standalone CED file.

Use an online converter cautiously

CloudConvert and Zamzar can be considered for a confirmed, non-sensitive video file only when their current upload page explicitly lists the detected CED variant as supported. They cannot decode every proprietary CED file, and uploading footage sends it to a third party. For an unknown or private file, MediaInfo, FFprobe, FFmpeg, HandBrake, and the original camera software are safer choices.

Quality and recovery limits

Transcoding cannot recover detail from a damaged or incomplete recording. Preserve the original CED file, the associated clips, and the card image until the MP4 has been checked for complete duration, audio, orientation, interlacing, aspect ratio, and synchronization.

If no matching video clip exists and CED contains only metadata or an index, no converter can reconstruct the missing footage. If the source is rotated, interlaced, stretched, or uses an unusual audio codec, retain its metadata or configure those properties explicitly instead of forcing a generic preset.
