A fixed-layout document may be required for printing, formal submission, citation, or software and devices that do not support EPUB. Converting creates stable page breaks for sharing and archiving, but it cannot preserve EPUB’s ability to reflow text for different screens.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is an ebook format packaged as a ZIP archive containing XHTML text, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, metadata, and navigation files. Most EPUB books use a reflowable layout that adapts to screen size, font settings, and reading software; EPUB also supports fixed-layout publications. Publishers, ebook stores, digital libraries, documentation systems, authors, and ebook editors commonly use the format.

What the PDF format is

PDF stores pages with fixed positions for text, images, fonts, and vector graphics. It preserves page size, page breaks, and visual placement more consistently than a reflowable EPUB, which makes it suitable for printing, forms, formal submissions, citations, and archival copies. PDF is less convenient for small screens because its text does not automatically reflow, and accessibility or text selection may be reduced if the conversion produces poorly structured pages.

How to convert the file with Calibre

Calibre is free desktop software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It converts ordinary, DRM-free EPUB files and provides settings for paper size, margins, fonts, and output profiles.

1. Install and open Calibre.
2. Choose Add books and select the .epub file.
3. Select the book in the library and choose Convert books.
4. Set the output format in the upper-right corner to PDF.
5. Open Page setup and select the intended paper size, margins, and output profile. Use a paper profile for printing or an ebook and tablet profile for screen reading.
6. Review Look & feel settings only when needed. Changing font sizes, line spacing, or margins can alter page breaks, tables, and image placement.
7. Click OK. Select the book and choose Open containing folder to find the generated PDF.

For repeated conversions, Calibre also provides the command-line utility ebook-convert:

ebook-convert input.epub output.pdf

Put quotation marks around filenames containing spaces, such as ebook-convert "My book.epub" "My book.pdf".

Do not upload DRM-protected, confidential, or personally identifying content unless the service’s privacy terms meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limits

• A reflowable EPUB has no permanent page boundaries, so the converter must create them. Chapter breaks, tables, footnotes, sidebars, headers, and image positions may differ from the source.
• Open the PDF at its intended paper size and check for missing characters, substituted fonts, clipped content, unexpected blank pages, incorrect table wrapping, broken hyperlinks, and altered headers or footers.
• Embedded fonts and complex CSS may render differently between conversion engines. Script-driven, interactive, or heavily layout-dependent EPUBs may need editing in the source files before conversion.
• DRM-protected EPUBs may not convert. Use an authorized DRM-free copy or the publisher’s supported export function; do not bypass access controls.
• A normal ebook conversion is not automatically press-ready. Professional printing may require verification of trim size, bleed, margins, image resolution, color handling, font embedding, and PDF/X requirements in dedicated publishing software.
