How to convert epub to mp3 file

  • Ebooks

A phone, car stereo, or audio editor that cannot open ebook files may require an MP3 version of an EPUB. The process normally uses text-to-speech (TTS), so it creates synthetic narration rather than extracting a professional audiobook recording.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is an ebook container that normally packages HTML or XHTML, CSS, metadata, images, fonts, and navigation files in a ZIP-based structure. Most EPUBs are reflowable, allowing the reader to change font size and adapting the layout to different screens; fixed-layout EPUBs are an exception.

Publishers, authors, libraries, ebook stores, schools, and reading applications use EPUB for novels, manuals, textbooks, and other digital publications. Common EPUB software includes Apple Books, Thorium Reader, Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, and Sigil. An EPUB may contain text only, or additional images, tables, equations, hyperlinks, and accessibility metadata.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy MPEG audio format supported by phones, computers, car stereos, portable players, media servers, and most audio editors. Its compression produces much smaller files than uncompressed WAV or AIFF, making it practical for spoken content and sharing.

For synthetic speech, mono MP3 at 64–128 kbps is usually sufficient; 96 kbps is a useful starting point. MP3 contains only the generated audio, not the EPUB's text structure, styling, images, links, searchability, or interactive features. A one-hour mono file encoded at 96 kbps occupies approximately 43 MB.

How to convert an EPUB to MP3

Windows with Calibre and Balabolka

  1. Install Calibre from calibre-ebook.com and Balabolka from cross-plus-a.com/balabolka.htm. Balabolka can use the speech voices installed in Windows; Windows Narrator itself is an accessibility reader, not a general EPUB-to-MP3 exporter.
  2. Add the EPUB to Calibre, select it, and choose Convert books. Set the output format to TXT, confirm the title and author, and save the converted text. The command-line equivalent is ebook-convert book.epub book.txt.
  3. Open book.txt in Balabolka with File → Open. Select a suitable voice and adjust speed, pitch, and pronunciation rules. Correct names, abbreviations, headings, and obvious extraction errors before rendering a long book.
  4. Choose File → Save Audio File, select MP3, and use a speech-oriented bitrate such as 96 or 128 kbps. Export separate chapter files when possible; one file for an entire book is harder to navigate and edit.

MacOS with Calibre, say, and FFmpeg

  1. Convert the EPUB to plain text with Calibre, or run ebook-convert book.epub book.txt in Terminal.
  2. List installed macOS voices with say -v '?'. Generate an intermediate AIFF file with say -v VoiceName -f book.txt -o book.aiff, replacing VoiceName with an available voice.
  3. Install FFmpeg with Homebrew if necessary using brew install ffmpeg, then encode the speech as MP3: ffmpeg -i book.aiff -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 96k book.mp3.

Linux and other systems

Convert the EPUB to text with Calibre, then use an installed TTS engine. For example, espeak-ng -f book.txt -w book.wav creates WAV audio, and ffmpeg -i book.wav -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 96k book.mp3 creates the MP3. Piper and other neural TTS engines can sound more natural, but their installation, voice models, and commands vary by distribution.

Online conversion

Online services such as Zamzar or Convertio may list EPUB-to-MP3 conversion, but availability, file-size limits, processing queues, voice quality, and retention policies change. Confirm that the service performs TTS rather than merely changing a file extension, and download the result before its stated deletion deadline. Do not upload unpublished, private, DRM-protected, or confidential books unless the service's handling terms are acceptable; desktop conversion avoids uploading the source.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • DRM: Encrypted EPUBs from some stores and library systems may not open in Calibre or TTS software. Do not bypass DRM unless the rights holder and applicable law permit it.
  • Reading order: Tables, footnotes, sidebars, captions, equations, columns, pronunciation guides, and complex HTML can produce poor plain text or incorrect narration. Inspect and edit the extracted text before generating audio.
  • Chapter navigation: Plain-text conversion can remove chapter boundaries. Convert chapters separately when the source structure allows it, or split and edit the text manually before TTS.
  • Voice accuracy: TTS can mispronounce names, abbreviations, foreign words, and markup remnants. Voice selection, speed changes, pronunciation dictionaries, and manual text edits reduce recurring errors.
  • Existing audio: Some EPUBs contain audio or media-overlay narration. A TTS conversion does not extract that recording; extracting embedded media is a different task and may require inspecting the EPUB package.
  • Rights: A purchase or library loan may restrict format conversion even when the software permits it. Sharing the resulting narration can create additional copyright and performance-rights issues.
