  • Ebooks

Some comic-book readers and digital comic libraries accept CBR but not EPUB. The conversion renders the EPUB as page images and stores those images in a RAR archive with a .cbr extension.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is a ZIP-based ebook format containing HTML or XHTML content, CSS, fonts, images, navigation data, and metadata. Its reflowable layout adapts to screen size and reader settings; fixed-layout EPUBs preserve designed page dimensions. Publishers, authors, libraries, ebook stores, and applications such as Calibre and Sigil commonly use EPUB files.

What the CBR format is

CBR is a comic-book archive: a RAR archive containing sequential page images, usually JPEG or PNG files. Comic readers identify it by the .cbr extension and display the images in filename order. It suits scanned comics, manga, and illustrated books because it preserves fixed page images in one file. RAR compression has little effect on already-compressed JPEG images; image dimensions and JPEG quality usually determine the final size.

How to convert EPUB to CBR

The dependable desktop workflow is EPUB → PDF → page images → RAR/CBR. Calibre performs the ebook rendering, Poppler supplies the pdftoppm image converter, and WinRAR or the RAR command-line utility creates the archive.

  1. Install Calibre and convert the EPUB to PDF with ebook-convert input.epub output.pdf, or use Calibre → Convert books → Output format: PDF. Set the page size, margins, font size, and output profile before conversion. These settings determine the rendered page dimensions and may add margins that are unsuitable for comics.
  2. Inspect the PDF before rasterizing it. Check chapter breaks, fonts, missing images, page size, and reading direction. Reflowable EPUBs require this rendering step because their source files do not contain fixed pages.
  3. Install Poppler and convert the PDF to images with pdftoppm -png -r 150 output.pdf page. This creates files such as page-1.png and page-2.png. Use -r 200 or -r 300 for small text or detailed artwork, at the cost of larger files. JPEG output is generally smaller for photographic or color-heavy pages; PNG preserves sharp text and line art but can be much larger.
  4. Review the images for missing pages, unwanted margins, broken fonts, cropping, rotation, and incorrect reading order. Rename them with zero-padded numbers when needed, such as page-001.jpg and page-002.jpg, so lexical filename order matches page order.
  5. Create a RAR archive, not a ZIP or 7z archive. With the RAR command-line utility, use rar a -m5 book.cbr page-*.png. In WinRAR, select the images, choose Add to archive, select the RAR archive format, and save the file as book.cbr. The extension identifies the archive as a comic book; merely renaming a ZIP file to .cbr does not convert it.
  6. Open the result in a reader that supports CBR, such as CDisplayEx, YACReader, or SumatraPDF. Check the first and last pages, image order, rotation, and archive compatibility.

For a fixed-layout or image-only EPUB, extracting its image resources can avoid PDF rendering, but EPUB resource filenames do not necessarily represent reading order and may omit page composition or text overlays. Rendering the complete EPUB is safer when the source is reflowable or contains positioned elements.

Online conversion options

For a non-confidential file, CloudConvert or Zamzar can provide the EPUB-to-PDF intermediate conversion, and image-conversion services can rasterize the PDF. A direct online EPUB-to-CBR option is less consistently available; use it only when the service explicitly states that it creates a RAR archive, not a ZIP renamed to .cbr. Downloaded files should be tested in a CBR reader. Do not upload private, unreleased, DRM-protected, or copyrighted books unless the service terms and your rights permit it.

Quality and compatibility limits

CBR stores rasterized pages only. The conversion discards selectable text, reflow, hyperlinks, EPUB navigation semantics, accessibility structure, embedded fonts as fonts, and interactive content. Text may become less sharp, and the chosen PDF page size and rasterization resolution permanently determine the result.

DRM-protected EPUBs generally cannot be converted by Calibre. Do not bypass DRM; use an authorized DRM-free copy or a platform-supported export.

CBR support varies among ebook and mobile applications, and some devices support CBZ more reliably. If RAR creation or playback is unavailable, create a ZIP archive containing the same numbered images and use the .cbz extension instead.
