What the EPUB format is

EPUB is a ZIP-based ebook container that can hold XHTML or HTML content, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, metadata, and navigation files. Its reflowable layout adapts to screen size, font settings, and reading software, so a reflowable EPUB has no universal page boundaries. Fixed-layout EPUBs define page dimensions and usually render more predictably.

Publishers, libraries, schools, authors, and desktop-publishing applications use EPUB for electronic books and other paginated publications. Common readers include Apple Books, Thorium Reader, Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Kobo software, and mobile ebook apps.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a raster image format designed primarily for photographs and other continuous-tone graphics. Its lossy compression creates smaller files than uncompressed bitmap formats, and JPEG is supported by image editors, presentation software, websites, social platforms, and devices that cannot open EPUB.

JPEG is suitable for a rendered cover, illustration, or page snapshot. It does not preserve selectable text, hyperlinks, reflow, bookmarks, accessibility information, search, or ebook navigation. PNG is usually a better choice for pages dominated by line art, screenshots, or small text, but JPEG is the required output when the receiving application accepts only JPEG.

Quality and compatibility limits

For a reflowable EPUB, the final page appearance depends on paper size, margins, font availability, reader or converter engine, and CSS support. Embedded fonts, complex CSS, SVG illustrations, right-to-left scripts, animations, and interactive content can render differently or disappear. A fixed-layout EPUB generally retains its intended geometry more reliably.

JPEG compression can blur small type and create halos around high-contrast edges. Use roughly 200–300 DPI for readable page images when the conversion tool exposes a resolution setting, inspect the output at its intended display size, and avoid repeatedly saving an already compressed JPEG.

The conversion creates a visual copy, not an equivalent ebook. Keep the original EPUB when you need searchable text, selectable content, links, accessibility features, adjustable typography, or navigation.
