Convert JPEG to CBR

Comic-reader software and some e-readers open numbered page images most conveniently as a .cbr file. Creating one packages a folder of JPEG scans or comic pages into a single RAR-based archive without changing the images.

JPEG images and CBR archives

JPEG, normally stored as .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy raster-image format widely used by cameras, phones, scanners, browsers, and image editors such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Preview, and Paint. Each JPEG contains one image, so each comic page must be a separate file.

CBR means Comic Book RAR. It is a RAR archive with the filename extension changed to .cbr; comic readers treat the contained images as ordered pages. CBR is supported by applications including CDisplayEx, YACReader, ComicScreen, Perfect Viewer, Panels, and SumatraPDF.

Its advantage is packaging a chapter or issue into one file while retaining the original JPEG files. RAR compression rarely makes JPEG pages much smaller because JPEG data is already compressed.

Create a CBR file with WinRAR

WinRAR from RARLAB is the direct Windows option because it can create RAR archives. Put only the intended pages in one folder, then rename them in reading order with leading zeroes, for example 001.jpg, 002.jpg, and 003.jpg. Without zeroes, a reader may place 10.jpg before 2.jpg.

1. Select the JPEG files and choose WinRAR → Add to archive….
2. Set Archive format to RAR.
3. Set Compression method to Store. This avoids pointless recompression and preserves every JPEG byte.
4. Create comic.rar.
5. Rename the file to comic.cbr and accept the operating-system extension-change warning.

For older comic readers, select WinRAR's RAR 4.x compatibility option if available. Some older readers cannot open archives written in the newer RAR5 format.

With the RAR command-line tool, run this from the image folder:

rar a -ep -m0 comic.rar 001.jpg 002.jpg 003.jpg

-ep omits folder paths and -m0 uses Store mode. Rename the resulting comic.rar file to comic.cbr.

Other conversion options

7-Zip cannot create RAR archives, so it cannot make a genuine CBR file. It can create a ZIP-based .cbz archive: create a ZIP file from the ordered JPEGs and rename .zip to .cbz. CBZ is supported by most current comic readers and is easier to create on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

CloudConvert and Zamzar provide browser-based JPEG-to-CBR conversion. Upload files in the required page order, check the downloaded archive in a comic reader, and avoid online services for private scans or copyrighted material that should not be uploaded to a third party.

Page order and compatibility

Keep page images at the archive root and avoid extra folders, hidden system files, text files, and thumbnails. Put the cover first, usually as 001.jpg. Do not password-protect or encrypt the archive, because many comic readers cannot open encrypted CBR files.

Making a CBR file does not improve quality, remove JPEG artifacts, resize pages, or correct rotation. Some readers ignore JPEG EXIF orientation metadata, so permanently rotate incorrect scans before archiving with an editor such as XnView MP, IrfanView, Preview, or GIMP.

If the destination application rejects CBR, use CBZ unless it specifically requires RAR-based CBR files. Both containers can hold the same ordered JPEG pages.
