How to convert jpg to ico file

Windows shortcuts, application icons, and some website favicons require an ICO file rather than a photographic JPG. Converting the image creates an icon container that can hold several sizes for different display contexts.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format intended mainly for photographs and other images with many colors. Cameras, smartphones, scanners, web browsers, and editors such as Photoshop, GIMP, and Paint commonly create or export JPG files.

JPG uses lossy compression. Repeated editing and low-quality export settings can introduce block artifacts, ringing, and blurred detail. The format does not support an alpha channel, so it cannot store transparent pixels.

What the ICO format is

ICO is the icon format used by Windows for application, file, folder, and shortcut icons. A single ICO file can contain multiple raster images at different dimensions, allowing the operating system or another program to select an appropriate representation instead of enlarging one small bitmap.

Common entries include 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, 64×64, 128×128, and 256×256 pixels. ICO supports indexed color and true color; entries can also use PNG compression in modern implementations. An ICO can preserve transparency when its source image contains an alpha channel, but a JPG converted directly to ICO remains opaque.

How to perform the conversion

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the JPG-to-ICO converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the JPG file.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .ico file.

This option requires no installation. Check the output dimensions and transparency requirements before using the file in an application or website.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick can generate a multi-size ICO from the command line. Install a current release, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and run:

magick input.jpg -define icon:auto-resize=256,128,64,48,32,16 output.ico

Replace input.jpg with the actual filename. The command creates separate icon entries at the listed sizes. A multi-size file is preferable for Windows applications because the system can select a suitable entry for each display context.

To create one square 256-pixel entry while preserving the image's proportions, run:

magick input.jpg -resize 256x256^ -gravity center -extent 256x256 output.ico

The ^ geometry fills the square, and -extent crops the excess edges. This avoids distortion but can remove content from the sides or top and bottom of a rectangular image.

Using a desktop image editor

In GIMP, Photoshop, or another editor with ICO export support, open the JPG, crop or resize it to a square, and export or save it as .ico. If the editor cannot write ICO files, export a PNG and use an ICO-capable converter or ImageMagick. Menu names vary by application; Illustrator is not a dependable ICO export choice without a compatible plug-in or additional conversion step.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • Use a square source image when possible. A rectangular image must be cropped, padded, or distorted to fit a square icon canvas.
  • Photographs lose recognizable detail at 16×16 or 32×32 pixels. Crop around the subject and simplify the composition before exporting.
  • Direct JPG conversion cannot create transparency. Remove the background in an editor, export the result as a PNG with an alpha channel, and convert that PNG to ICO.
  • For Windows application icons, include several sizes in one ICO, commonly 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, and 256×256. Confirm the target framework's required sizes and color depth.
  • Browsers commonly accept favicon.ico, although PNG favicons are also supported by modern browsers. Test the generated file in the target operating system, application, or browser because older software may reject unusual dimensions, color modes, or compressed entries.
