How to convert 3ga to mp4 file

  • Audio

Phone voice recordings saved as .3ga may be rejected by an editor, player, or sharing service that accepts MP4 but not 3GPP audio. Converting them to an audio-only .mp4 container improves compatibility without adding a video track.

What the 3GA format is

3GA is an audio-only variant of the 3GPP container used by mobile phones, especially some Samsung Voice Recorder and Android applications. It commonly contains AAC or AMR audio; the exact codec depends on the phone and recording settings. The file may contain voice memos, interviews, calls, or other microphone recordings.

A player that rejects .3ga does not necessarily indicate a damaged file. The application may lack 3GPP container support or the decoder required by the embedded audio codec.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is an MPEG-4 container that can hold audio without a video stream. AAC audio in an MP4 container is supported by most current phones, browsers, media players, and editing applications.

The .mp4 extension identifies the container, not the codec. MP4 can contain AAC, ALAC, Opus, and other streams, but AAC provides the safest compatibility for an audio-only MP4. An .m4a file is often the more conventional extension for audio-only MP4-family files; use .mp4 when the destination specifically requires that extension.

How to convert 3GA to MP4

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install it from ffmpeg.org or your operating system's package manager, open a terminal in the folder containing the recording, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.3ga -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4

This decodes the source and encodes AAC at 128 kbps, which is generally sufficient for speech. Use 192 kbps when the source contains music or higher-quality audio:

ffmpeg -i input.3ga -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4

If the source already contains AAC, try a lossless container change first:

ffmpeg -i input.3ga -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.mp4

Stream copying does not decode or recompress the audio, but it may fail or create a file with limited playback support when the source contains AMR or another codec that MP4 players do not support consistently. Use AAC encoding instead in that case.

Using a graphical application

Shutter Encoder provides an FFmpeg-based interface. Add the .3ga file and use Rewrap only when the source codec is suitable for MP4; select MP4 as the destination container. If rewrapping is unavailable or produces an incompatible file, choose an audio conversion function, select AAC, set the output container or extension to .mp4, and start the job.

VLC can also perform the conversion through Media → Convert / Save: add the file, select Convert / Save, choose an audio profile using AAC, edit the destination filename to end in .mp4, and start. Verify that the selected profile produces an audio-only MP4 rather than a video container with an unintended video stream.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert and Zamzar accept common 3GA recordings and provide MP4 output through a browser. Upload the file, choose MP4 as the target format, start the conversion, and download the result. Online services are unsuitable for confidential interviews, medical recordings, legal material, or private messages unless their upload, retention, and deletion policies meet your requirements. Desktop FFmpeg processes the recording locally.

Quality and compatibility limits

Rewrapping with -c:a copy preserves the original audio stream and therefore avoids another generation of compression. AAC conversion decodes and recompresses the recording, which can cause some quality loss, but it is usually required for AMR sources and broad MP4 compatibility.

Changing the container cannot restore detail already lost during recording. Narrowband AMR speech remains narrowband after conversion. Keep the original .3ga file as the archival copy and use the MP4 for playback, editing, or sharing.

After conversion, check the duration, playback, channel layout, and file size in the intended application. Some programs designed primarily for video may show no video thumbnail for a valid audio-only MP4. If the destination accepts it, an AAC file with an .m4a extension may be better recognized as audio, but it does not satisfy a requirement for .mp4.
