How to convert 3ga to 3gp file

Some older phones, MMS applications, and media players accept an audio recording only when it uses the .3gp extension. Converting a .3ga file can also make the recording easier to share, although a container-only change is often sufficient.
What 3GA is
.3ga is a filename extension commonly used for audio-only files stored in the 3GPP multimedia container. Samsung Voice Recorder and other mobile recording applications have used it for recordings containing AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC, or another codec supported by 3GPP media.
3GA is not a fundamentally different audio codec from 3GP. The extension usually signals that the file contains audio without video; the underlying container and codec determine whether a particular player can open it. A recording can also contain metadata and, depending on the originating application, more than one audio track.
What 3GP is
.3gp identifies a 3GPP multimedia container designed for mobile phones, MMS, and older cellular networks. It can contain video with audio or an audio track alone, including AMR and AAC.
For this conversion, the output can be an audio-only 3GP file with no video track. AMR-NB offers broad compatibility with older telephones and small files but is intended mainly for speech. AAC usually provides better quality for music at a comparable bitrate, but some legacy phones and MMS systems cannot decode it.
Convert it with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop option for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Put the source file in a working folder, open a terminal there, and first try a stream-copy conversion:
ffmpeg -i input.3ga -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.3gp
This places the original audio stream in a 3GP container without re-encoding it, so it preserves the original quality. The command can fail if the source codec or its parameters are not accepted by the 3GP muxer.
For older speech-focused devices, re-encode to AMR-NB:
ffmpeg -i input.3ga -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k output.3gp
This requires an FFmpeg build containing the libopencore_amrnb encoder. If that encoder is unavailable, use AAC for devices that support it:
ffmpeg -i input.3ga -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 96k output.3gp
-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, and -vn prevents video from being included. Change the filenames and audio settings to match the receiving device. FFmpeg writes the container based on the .3gp output extension.
Use a graphical or online converter
For a graphical workflow, use a converter that explicitly lists both 3GA input and 3GP output and offers audio codec settings. Select the source file, choose 3GP as the output container, disable video if the program provides that option, select AMR for maximum legacy-phone compatibility or AAC for better music quality, then export.
CloudConvert and Zamzar may provide this conversion, but their supported formats and codec options can change. Upload the file, select 3GP, choose an audio-only or AMR/AAC setting when available, and download the result. Do not upload private recordings without checking the service's retention and deletion terms; FFmpeg processes the files locally.
Compatibility and quality limits
Copying the stream with -c:a copy does not change audio quality, but it does not solve codec support problems. Re-encoding always changes the audio: AMR-NB at 8 kHz and low bitrates is suitable for speech, while AAC at roughly 64–96 kbps is generally more appropriate for ordinary music or voice recordings when the target device supports it.
Renaming recording.3ga to recording.3gp is not a conversion, but it can work when the file already uses a compatible 3GPP structure and the receiving software rejects only the extension. A real remux or re-encode is safer when the target application checks the container, codec, or file metadata. Test the output on the exact phone, messaging application, or player that requires 3GP.
