Convert MSWMM to MP4

Phones, browsers, editing applications, and upload services commonly require MP4, but an MSWMM file is only a Windows Movie Maker project. Open the project with its original media, render it to a video file such as WMV, then convert that rendered file to MP4.

What the MSWMM format is

.mswmm is a Windows Movie Maker project file. It stores the editing arrangement—clips, transitions, titles, effects, and timing—but normally does not contain the underlying video, audio, or image files.

Movie Maker looks for those source files at their recorded locations. If a file was moved, renamed, deleted, or stored on an unavailable drive, the project shows missing-media placeholders and cannot render the complete video. The MSWMM file alone is therefore not enough for conversion or recovery.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a container format commonly used with H.264 video and AAC audio. This combination is supported by current phones, browsers, televisions, media players, editors, cloud services, and social platforms.

H.264/AAC MP4 generally offers broader compatibility and a better size-to-quality ratio than the WMV output commonly produced by Movie Maker. MP4 remains a lossy delivery format, so retain the project and source files if they are needed for future editing or archival.

How to convert the project

1. Gather every video, audio, and image file used by the project. Restore them to their original paths when possible; otherwise open the project in Movie Maker and locate each missing file when prompted.
2. Use a compatible installation of Windows Movie Maker or Windows Live Movie Maker on Windows. Microsoft discontinued Movie Maker and does not include it in current Windows installations, so avoid unofficial download sites that bundle altered installers or unwanted software.
3. Open the .mswmm file and inspect the timeline, preview, titles, transitions, and audio. Fix missing media before exporting.
4. Render the project using the version-appropriate command: File → Save movie file in older Movie Maker versions, or Save movie → For computer in Windows Live Movie Maker. Select the computer-quality option that preserves the source resolution and frame rate when available, then save the result as .wmv.
5. Open the WMV file in HandBrake, which is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose the file, select an appropriate preset such as Fast 1080p30 only when the source is 1080p and approximately 30 fps, and set Format: MP4, Video Encoder: H.264 (x264), and AAC audio. In the video settings, match the source frame rate and choose Constant Framerate when compatibility with an editor or device matters. Select Start Encode and save the output as .mp4.

FFmpeg can perform the second step after Movie Maker has created the WMV:

ffmpeg -i input.wmv -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4

+faststart moves MP4 metadata to the beginning of the file, which can improve progressive playback while downloading. Adjust the video quality with an appropriate CRF value, for example -crf 20; lower values produce larger files and higher quality.

CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert the exported WMV online, but they generally cannot open an MSWMM project because it is not a self-contained video. Upload only the rendered WMV, and check the service's file-size limits, privacy policy, and retention period before sending private footage.

Quality and compatibility limits

Export the project from Movie Maker at the highest suitable quality, then perform one WMV-to-MP4 transcode. Repeated lossy conversions can introduce additional blur, block artifacts, and audio degradation; conversion cannot restore quality already lost in the WMV render.

Keep the original project, source media, and highest-quality rendered file for editing or archival. If the project opens with missing media and no complete WMV or other rendered video exists, renaming .mswmm to .mp4 will not convert it.

For general device and web compatibility, use an MP4 containing H.264 video, AAC audio, the source resolution, and a constant frame rate. Interlaced or unusual source footage may require deinterlacing or manual frame-rate settings rather than a general-purpose preset.
