Older PC games often store cutscenes in Interplay MVE files that current players and editors cannot open. Converting the footage to MP4 makes it easier to play, share, archive, or import into modern video software.

What the MVE format is

In the Video category, MVE usually means Interplay MVE, a proprietary multimedia container used by late-1990s and early-2000s PC games from Interplay and related studios. Games in the Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment series are common sources.

An MVE file can contain low-resolution compressed video and Interplay DPCM audio. It is not a general-purpose modern video format, and renaming .mve to .mp4 does not convert either stream. Some files using the extension may come from a different game engine, so the Interplay format should be confirmed before choosing a converter.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a container that can hold several video and audio codecs. For the widest compatibility, encode H.264 video with AAC audio; this combination is supported by current operating systems, browsers, phones, media players, and video editors.

MP4 is suitable for uploading, embedding in projects, playback without the original game, and long-term storage with other modern video files. It may be smaller than an uncompressed intermediate, but it cannot make an already compressed MVE image more detailed.

How to convert an MVE file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most practical local option because current builds include an Interplay MVE demuxer and decoders for its video and DPCM audio. Install a current build from the official FFmpeg download resources or a reputable package manager.

  1. Copy the MVE file to an accessible folder and open Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, or another shell in that folder.
  2. Inspect the file if necessary with ffprobe input.mve. Confirm that FFmpeg identifies an Interplay MVE input and lists the expected video and audio streams.
  3. Run the following command, replacing the filenames:

ffmpeg -i input.mve -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

-map 0:a? makes the audio stream optional, so a video-only file can still be converted. The crf value controls H.264 quality: 18 preserves more detail, while 22 or 24 usually produces a smaller file. yuv420p avoids playback problems on older hardware. +faststart moves MP4 metadata to the beginning for progressive playback.

Check the result with ffplay output.mp4 or a standard MP4 player. If the source has no audio, omit the audio option if required by the FFmpeg build: -c:a aac -b:a 160k.

When FFmpeg cannot read the file

Try a newer FFmpeg build first. If it still reports an invalid or unsupported input, use OpenMVE, a desktop player and utility designed for Interplay MVE files, to verify that the file is genuine and playable. Where the installed OpenMVE build provides an export or extraction function, create a supported intermediate and encode that file with FFmpeg.

A file copied from damaged game media may contain incomplete video or audio chunks. Recopy it from the original disc, installation media, or a verified archive before troubleshooting the converter. If the file plays in OpenMVE but FFmpeg cannot decode it, export or capture it with OpenMVE rather than changing its extension.

Online conversion and compatibility

Most general online converters do not reliably accept Interplay MVE. A service such as CloudConvert or Convertio is an option only when its current input-format list explicitly includes this MVE variant; upload a short test copy, not irreplaceable source material. Online processing also exposes game assets or copyrighted footage to a third party, so local FFmpeg or OpenMVE is preferable.

Conversion cannot restore detail discarded by the original game codec. MVE cutscenes are often small and low-frame-rate, so increasing resolution or bitrate only creates a larger file. Re-encoding also introduces another generation of compression; retain the original MVE and any intermediate files if archival quality matters.
