How to convert trp to mp4 file

  • Video

TRP recordings from a television receiver, DVR, or surveillance device often need conversion when a phone, browser, editor, or sharing service requires MP4. Converting can also replace MPEG-2 video with H.264 to reduce the file size, but the original TRP should be retained for archiving.

What the TRP format is

In video applications, TRP usually identifies an MPEG-2 Transport Stream recording. Digital-TV receivers, satellite and cable set-top boxes, DVRs, HDTV capture software, and some surveillance systems use it to store video together with multiple audio, subtitle, metadata, or data streams.

A TRP file can contain MPEG-2 or H.264 video and MPEG audio, AAC, or AC-3 audio. Some recorders add proprietary indexes or encryption, so a file copied from a DVR may work only in that device manufacturer's software. Files split into numbered segments may also require the recorder's own export function.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container supported by most phones, browsers, televisions, media libraries, and video editors. The most compatible combination is usually H.264/AVC video with AAC audio. MP4 itself does not guarantee a smaller file: size depends mainly on the codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoding settings.

Changing only the container with stream copying preserves quality and is fast, but it works only when the TRP's codecs and timestamps are suitable for MP4. Re-encoding to H.264 and AAC produces broader compatibility and may reduce size, at the cost of processing time and another generation of compression.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop option for large, unusual, or multi-stream recordings on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it from a trusted build or your operating system's package manager, then open a terminal in the folder containing recording.trp.

First inspect the available streams:

ffprobe recording.trp

For a broadly compatible MP4, re-encode the first video and first audio stream:

ffmpeg -i recording.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart recording.mp4

With H.264, a CRF near 18 preserves more detail, while a value near 23 usually creates a smaller file; the suitable value depends on the source. The question mark in -map 0:a:0? allows conversion to continue when the file has no audio. For another language or audio track, inspect ffprobe and select the required stream with an explicit map such as -map 0:2.

If the TRP already contains MP4-compatible codecs, try a lossless remux first:

ffmpeg -i recording.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -movflags +faststart recording.mp4

This is fast and does not recompress the media, but it can fail or produce an unsuitable file when the source contains MPEG-2 video, incompatible audio, unsupported subtitles, damaged timestamps, or transport-stream features that MP4 cannot represent. Use the re-encoding command when playback or seeking fails.

Using VLC or a desktop converter

For an occasional unencrypted file, VLC can often perform the conversion through Media → Convert/Save → Add → Convert/Save. Choose an output profile that uses H.264 video and AAC audio, set a destination ending in .mp4, and start the conversion. Profile names and available codecs vary by VLC version.

Shutter Encoder is another desktop option with an FFmpeg-based interface. Add the TRP file, choose an H.264 or H.264/AAC output such as H.264, set the output folder, and start the job. If the program does not recognize the extension, do not assume that renaming it is a conversion; try opening a copy renamed from .trp to .ts only when the file is an ordinary MPEG Transport Stream.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert and Convertio may accept TRP files and can be useful for a small, non-confidential recording. Upload the file, choose MP4, select H.264 video and AAC audio if codec options are available, start the conversion, and download the result before the service's retention period expires. Support, maximum size, processing time, and stream handling vary by service and TRP variant.

Online conversion transfers the complete recording to a third party, so it is unsuitable for sensitive surveillance footage, private broadcasts, or copyrighted material that cannot be uploaded. Desktop FFmpeg, VLC, or Shutter Encoder avoids those upload limits.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion cannot restore detail already lost in the broadcast recording. Re-encoding can introduce additional artifacts, and changing to H.264/AAC may remove unsupported subtitles, teletext, alternate audio tracks, or broadcast metadata unless they are explicitly selected and supported by the output container.

Keep the original TRP when it is needed as an archive. Encrypted, incomplete, corrupt, or proprietary DVR files may require the recorder's export software and cannot be repaired by changing the extension. Do not concatenate numbered TRP segments arbitrarily; use the recorder's documented order or export procedure to avoid missing frames and broken timestamps.
