What the TRP format is
TRP is a video transport-stream container commonly created by digital television receivers, satellite or cable set-top boxes, and personal video recorders. It usually contains MPEG-2 or H.264 video with AAC, AC-3, or MPEG audio, and may include broadcast metadata, subtitles, or multiple program streams.
TRP files are often encountered after copying recordings from a DVR or receiver. Some devices split one recording into numbered segments; others encrypt or protect the files, preventing ordinary converters from reading them.
What the VOB format is
VOB is the MPEG program-stream container used inside a DVD-Video disc's VIDEO_TS folder. It can contain MPEG-2 video, DVD-compatible audio such as AC-3, MPEG audio, or LPCM, subtitles, navigation data, and menu-related streams.
A VOB is useful for DVD authoring and playback on hardware DVD players. Changing a filename extension to .vob does not create a valid DVD-Video file; the streams must meet DVD restrictions, and a complete disc also requires IFO and BUP navigation files.
How to convert TRP to VOB
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg is suitable for both remuxing and re-encoding. First check the source streams:
ffprobe input.trp
If the TRP already contains DVD-compliant MPEG-2 video and audio, try a stream copy:
ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f dvd output.vob
This avoids quality loss, but it will not fix an H.264 video stream, an unsupported resolution, a non-DVD frame rate, or incompatible audio. For a DVD-compatible conversion, choose the television standard used by the intended player:
ffmpeg -i input.trp -target pal-dvd -f dvd output.vob
ffmpeg -i input.trp -target ntsc-dvd -f dvd output.vob
pal-dvd normally produces 720×576 video at 25 fps; ntsc-dvd normally produces 720×480 video at approximately 29.97 fps. Use only one target, based on the source and player. The target preset re-encodes video and audio, so the result can be larger or less sharp than the original.
If the recorder created consecutive files such as recording.001.trp and recording.002.trp, create segments.txt with one line per file:
file 'recording.001.trp'
file 'recording.002.trp'
Then process the sequence:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i segments.txt -target pal-dvd -f dvd output.vob
The segments should come from the same recording and use matching codecs, dimensions, and time bases. Replace pal-dvd with ntsc-dvd when required.
Using 101convert.com
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the TRP file, select VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This option may not work with encrypted DVR recordings or files larger than the service's upload limit.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Stream copying preserves the original quality but only works when the source is already compatible with the DVD-Video specification. Re-encoding is required for H.264, HEVC, unusual frame sizes, unsupported frame rates, or audio formats such as AAC.
DVD-Video uses standard-definition resolutions and has a maximum video bitrate of roughly 9.8 Mb/s, so an HD TRP recording must be downscaled. A converted standalone VOB may play in software but still may not play in a hardware DVD player until it is authored into a DVD structure with software such as DVDStyler or dvdauthor.
Encrypted or proprietary DVR recordings require the original recorder's export function; FFmpeg cannot decrypt them. Check the output with ffprobe output.vob before authoring the disc.
