DVR and set-top-box recordings saved as TRP often cannot be opened by browser-based players or WebM-focused editors. Converting the MPEG transport-stream recording to WEBM provides a browser-friendly file using VP8, VP9, or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio.

What the TRP format is

In the Video category, TRP is generally a transport-stream recording produced by digital television receivers, DVRs, set-top boxes, and some broadcast-recording applications. It commonly contains MPEG-2 or H.264 video with audio, subtitles, and multiple broadcast streams inside an MPEG transport stream.

Some devices split long recordings into several TRP files or add proprietary metadata. A TRP file may also be encrypted or tied to the recording device, in which case ordinary converters cannot decode it.

What the WEBM format is

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option and reads many TRP files directly. Install FFmpeg, place the input file in an accessible folder, then run:

This encodes the first video and first available audio stream as VP9 and Opus. Lower the video CRF value for higher quality and a larger file; values around 28–36 are a practical starting range. Use -crf 28 for higher quality or -crf 36 for a smaller file.

For faster encoding with lower compression efficiency, use VP8:

ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libvpx -crf 10 -b:v 1M -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.webm

Inspect streams before converting when the recording contains several channels or audio tracks:

ffprobe input.trp

Change -map 0:v:0 and -map 0:a:0? to the required stream indexes if the first tracks are not the desired ones. If the source is interlaced television video, add deinterlacing:

ffmpeg -i input.trp -vf bwdif -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 32 -b:v 0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.webm
