A TRP recording may not open in older media players, DVD authoring tools, or editing software that expects DivX-compatible AVI video. Converting it can also reduce file size and make a DVR or broadcast recording easier to share.

What the TRP format is

In the Video category, TRP usually means an MPEG-2 Transport Stream recording. Digital video recorders, satellite and terrestrial TV receivers, IPTV systems, and some surveillance devices use the format to store broadcast video with MPEG-2 video and AC-3, MPEG audio, or AAC sound.

TRP files often contain transport-stream data such as multiple audio tracks, subtitles, timing information, or interrupted recording segments. A file may be playable in VLC or FFmpeg but rejected by older editors because its container and stream layout differ from standard AVI. Some DVR-produced TRP files are encrypted or use proprietary metadata; those files must be exported by the original recorder software before normal conversion is possible.

What the DIVX format is

DivX generally refers to MPEG-4 Part 2 video encoded for DivX-compatible players, commonly stored in an AVI-based file with a .divx or .avi extension. It was designed for hardware DVD players, televisions, and media players that support DivX or the compatible DX50 video tag.

DivX output can be smaller than MPEG-2 TRP while retaining acceptable standard-definition quality. It is useful when the destination device does not support transport streams, H.264, or modern Matroska and MP4 files. It is not a lossless conversion: the MPEG-2 video must be decoded and encoded again.

How to actually convert TRP to DIVX

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a build that includes the libxvid encoder, then inspect the source before converting:

For a standard DivX-compatible AVI-style output, run:

ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k -f avi output.divx

The -q:v 4 setting uses quality-based video encoding; lower values produce larger, higher-quality files. Replace input.trp and output.divx with the actual filenames. If the target player only recognizes AVI, use output.avi; the container and codec settings matter more than the extension.

If the FFmpeg build lacks libxvid, use the built-in MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder with the DivX-compatible four-character code:

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Many TRP recordings are interlaced. If the output shows comb-shaped motion artifacts, deinterlace during conversion with -vf yadif; this improves progressive playback but removes some vertical detail.
• DivX-compatible hardware commonly expects MPEG-4 Part 2 video, MP3 audio, AVI structure, and conventional resolutions such as 720×576 or 720×480. Very high resolutions, unusual frame rates, AC-3 audio, multiple audio tracks, and variable stream layouts may fail on older players.
• Use -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? to select the first video and optional first audio stream. Remove the mapping options if the TRP contains a different stream order or if you need to retain several audio tracks.
• Conversion cannot restore missing broadcast data or improve an already low-quality recording. Cropping, scaling, deinterlacing, and the second lossy encode can reduce detail.
