What the H.265 format is
H.265, also called HEVC, is a video compression standard designed to deliver similar visual quality at roughly half the bitrate of H.264 in suitable conditions. Phones, cameras, screen-recording tools, Blu-ray sources, streaming services, and modern editing applications commonly create HEVC video.
HEVC video is usually stored in .mp4, .mkv, .mov, or .ts containers; the filename extension identifies the container, not necessarily the video codec. Older hardware may fail because it lacks HEVC decoding, especially with 10-bit video, HDR, high frame rates, or unusual audio formats.
What the DIVX format is
DivX is a family of MPEG-4 Part 2 video codecs and commonly refers to video encoded with the DivX or Xvid encoder inside an AVI container. Files may use .divx or .avi; the extension alone does not guarantee DivX encoding.
DivX is useful for older televisions, DVD players, car entertainment systems, set-top boxes, and software that supports MPEG-4 Part 2 but not H.264 or HEVC. Its main advantage is legacy compatibility. At the same visual quality, it normally requires more bitrate and produces larger files than H.265.
How to convert H265 to DIVX
FFmpeg provides the most controllable desktop method. Install a build that includes the libxvid and libmp3lame encoders, then check availability with:
ffmpeg -encoders | findstr "libxvid libmp3lame"
On macOS or Linux, use grep instead of findstr. Convert an HEVC input such as input.mkv to a DivX-compatible AVI with:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -vtag DX50 -vf format=yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -ac 2 output.avi
libxvid selects the Xvid MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder, which is broadly compatible with DivX-era players. -q:v 4 requests quality-based encoding; values around 3–6 are practical starting points, with lower values producing larger files. -vtag DX50 writes the DivX 5-compatible AVI video tag. The filter converts the source to 8-bit 4:2:0 video, a common requirement for older devices. MP3 stereo audio at 128 kbps avoids many unsupported audio-codec combinations.
If the target device requires a .divx filename, rename the resulting AVI to output.divx only after testing playback; changing the extension does not change the codec or container. A graphical FFmpeg front end can expose the same settings through Video codec → Xvid, Container → AVI, and Audio codec → MP3.
For a browser-based conversion, you can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the source, choose DIVX, select the available quality or resolution settings, and download the converted file.
Quality and compatibility limits
This is a lossy re-encode: decoding HEVC and encoding MPEG-4 Part 2 cannot restore detail already discarded by the source. Use the highest acceptable quality setting and avoid repeated conversions. HEVC HDR and wide-gamut sources generally become SDR, 8-bit video unless the target encoder and playback device support a compatible color workflow.
Older DivX-certified hardware may require dimensions such as 720×576 for PAL or 720×480 for NTSC, modest frame rates, MP3 audio, and standard 4:3 or 16:9 pixel shapes. If playback fails, reduce the resolution and use a standard frame rate with:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vf "scale=720:576:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=720:576:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,format=yuv420p" -r 25 -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -vtag DX50 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -ac 2 output.avi
Check the converted file on the intended player, because “DivX” support varies by device firmware and may exclude high resolutions, variable frame rates, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or large AVI files.
