Files encoded with H.265/HEVC often fail to open in older video editors, televisions, and playback devices that expect AVI. Converting them to AVI changes the container and usually re-encodes the video to a more widely supported codec, so the result can be edited or played on legacy hardware.

What the H.265 format is

H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec rather than a container format. It provides about the same visual quality as H.264 at a lower bitrate, which makes it common in 4K recordings, phone videos, action cameras, Blu-ray releases, and screen-capture exports. Cameras and applications may store H.265 video inside .mp4, .mkv, or other containers, so the filename extension alone does not identify the codec. FFmpeg, HandBrake, VLC-based applications, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and many recent cameras can create or export H.265 files.

What the AVI format is

AVI, or Audio Video Interleave, is a Microsoft container that can hold video and audio streams. It is supported by many older Windows programs, editing systems, media players, and hardware devices. AVI itself does not define the compression method; common choices include MPEG-4 Part 2, Xvid, DivX, Motion JPEG, and sometimes H.264. For broad legacy compatibility, MPEG-4 Part 2 or Xvid video with MP3 audio is usually safer than placing H.265 inside an AVI file.

AVI has limited support for modern features such as advanced subtitles, multiple audio tracks, variable-frame-rate timing, and very large files. It also usually produces larger files than H.265 at comparable quality.

How to convert H.265 to AVI

Using the 101convert online converter

  1. Open the H265-to-AVI converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Choose the source video encoded with H.265/HEVC and select AVI as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting AVI file when processing finishes.

Online conversion avoids installing software, but uploading a large or private recording may be unsuitable because processing requires transferring the file to the website.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg gives direct control over the codecs, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings. The following command creates an AVI using MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi

Replace input.mp4 with the actual source filename; the source may also be .mkv or another container. Lower -q:v values increase quality and file size; values from 3 to 6 are a practical starting range. To target a specific video bitrate instead, use -b:v 4000k in place of -q:v 4.

For older hardware that requires Xvid-compatible encoding, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi

If the source has an unusual frame rate or variable timing, normalize it during conversion:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=30" -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi

Check the finished file in the target program before deleting the source. FFmpeg may need an installation that includes the libxvid and libmp3lame encoders.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting H.265 to AVI normally requires re-encoding because AVI-compatible applications often cannot decode H.265. Re-encoding causes some quality loss, and converting to AVI does not make the source more detailed. Keep the original H.265 file as the archival master.

Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source unless the receiving device requires different values. A 4K source converted to an older AVI-compatible device may need scaling, for example -vf "scale=1920:-2". AVI files larger than 4 GB can fail on software or devices that use outdated AVI implementations, even though the container specification can support larger files.
