Convert PRPROJ to AVI

A legacy Windows application, capture system, or analysis device may require an AVI file instead of a Premiere project. The export must render the selected Premiere Pro sequence; renaming .prproj to .avi cannot create a playable video.

What the PRPROJ format is

.prproj is Adobe Premiere Pro's project format. It stores sequences, edits, effects, transitions, titles, audio settings, and references to source media, but normally does not contain the original video and audio files.

Editors create PRPROJ files with File → Save or File → Save As. A project received from another editor or restored from an archive may also require its linked footage, audio, fonts, graphics, proxies, and third-party plug-ins. Premiere Pro versions are not fully interchangeable: an older version may not open a project saved by a newer version.

What the AVI format is

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a container used by older Windows software, industrial systems, legacy capture tools, and some broadcast or scientific workflows. It can contain uncompressed video, Motion JPEG, DV, FFV1, and other codecs, so file size, quality, and compatibility depend on the selected codec rather than on the AVI extension alone.

AVI is appropriate when the receiving system explicitly requires that container or a particular AVI codec. Uncompressed AVI files are very large, while Motion JPEG is smaller but lossy. Modern H.264 or H.265 files are usually more practical for web playback and general sharing.

How to export an AVI from Premiere Pro

1. Install Adobe Premiere Pro, preferably the version used to save the project or a compatible newer version. Open the .prproj file and relink offline media with Premiere's relink controls.
2. Open the required sequence and check its frame size, frame rate, duration, audio tracks, effects, captions, color management, and interlacing. Use File → Project Manager to collect the project and dependencies before moving it to another computer.
3. Choose File → Export → Media. Select AVI as the format if the installed Premiere Pro version and operating system provide that option. Current installations may not include legacy AVI export or the codec required by the destination system.
4. Choose the codec required by the receiving application. Use uncompressed video only when required; select Motion JPEG for a smaller, broadly supported file when some loss is acceptable; select a supported lossless codec when preserving image data is more important than size. Choose PCM audio for the widest legacy compatibility.
5. Set the output path and an .avi filename, review the export summary, and select Export. Select Queue to send the job to Adobe Media Encoder while continuing to work in Premiere Pro.

Do not choose a codec by extension alone. If the destination documentation specifies a codec, frame size, frame rate, pixel format, audio sample rate, or maximum file size, match those requirements exactly.

When Premiere Pro does not offer AVI

Export a high-quality intermediate from Premiere Pro, such as Apple ProRes, Avid DNxHR, or CineForm, then encode that file with FFmpeg. The intermediate avoids repeatedly compressing the timeline and lets FFmpeg provide codecs unavailable in the Premiere installation.

For Motion JPEG video with uncompressed PCM audio:

ffmpeg -i master.mov -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

For lossless FFV1 video with PCM audio:

ffmpeg -i master.mov -c:v ffv1 -level 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

Motion JPEG is lossy but is accepted by more older applications. FFV1 preserves the decoded image but requires software that supports the codec. Test the resulting file in the actual target application before delivering it.

Adobe Media Encoder can also encode the intermediate when its installed format list includes AVI. In that case, use File → Add Source, choose an AVI preset or format, verify its codec settings, and start the queue.

Online conversion options

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert a rendered MP4 or intermediate video to AVI, but they generally cannot open a PRPROJ file, resolve its linked media, or render its effects. Export the sequence locally first, then upload the rendered file only when the footage is suitable for third-party processing. Desktop Premiere Pro plus FFmpeg is preferable for confidential, large, or high-quality material.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Exporting to AVI cannot restore detail lost in the source or improve the sequence. Preserve the sequence's frame rate and dimensions unless the destination requires conversion, and avoid unnecessary scaling, frame-rate changes, and repeated lossy exports.

Older AVI 1.0 software may fail with files above 2 GB. OpenDML AVI supports larger files, but some legacy applications do not. Confirm the target system's maximum file size, accepted AVI variant, codec, pixel format, audio format, and interlacing requirements before rendering.

A PRPROJ file alone may not reproduce the timeline. Missing footage, fonts, plug-ins, graphics, proxies, or third-party effects can cause offline clips, altered text, different rendering, or export failure. Open the project and inspect the complete sequence before creating the AVI.
