Many older cameras, Blu-ray authoring tools, and broadcast workflows expect MTS rather than an H.265 elementary stream or MP4 file. Converting may require only a container change, but devices that support AVCHD usually need the video transcoded to H.264 for reliable playback.

What the H265 format is

H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec that compresses footage more efficiently than H.264 while preserving similar visual quality. Files ending in .h265 commonly contain a raw HEVC elementary stream with no standard media container; HEVC video can also be stored inside .mp4, .mkv, or other containers. Modern smartphones, action cameras, screen-recording software, and video editors create HEVC files, especially when recording 4K video or reducing storage use.

What the MTS format is

MTS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream container used mainly by AVCHD camcorders, Blu-ray-compatible workflows, and some broadcast devices. It can contain video, audio, subtitles, and metadata, commonly using H.264 video with AC-3 or LPCM audio. MTS supports streaming and error resilience, and its structure suits camera recording, but many consumer players and editing programs handle MP4 more easily.

How to actually convert H265 to MTS

FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop option because it can either copy compatible streams into an MPEG transport stream or transcode them to an AVCHD-friendly combination.

  1. Install FFmpeg and check the source streams with ffmpeg -i input.h265 or ffprobe input.mp4.
  2. If the source is a container such as MP4 and the target device accepts HEVC in an MPEG transport stream, rewrap it without re-encoding: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.mts.
  3. For a raw .h265 stream, specify the HEVC input format and encode H.264 video. Raw H.265 normally contains no audio: ffmpeg -f hevc -i input.h265 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset medium -crf 18 -an -f mpegts output.mts.
  4. If the source has audio, map it and encode it to AC-3, which is widely accepted in AVCHD-oriented workflows: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 18 -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -f mpegts output.mts.

For a graphical workflow, import the source into a video editor that supports FFmpeg-based export, choose Export or Render, select MPEG Transport Stream if available, and set H.264 video with AC-3 or AAC audio. Many editors label the output as MPEG-TS rather than MTS; the resulting .ts file can usually be renamed to .mts, but renaming alone does not convert the contents.

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the source, select MTS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Stream copying is fast and preserves the original quality, but an MTS file containing HEVC may fail on AVCHD cameras, Blu-ray tools, televisions, or editors that expect H.264. Transcoding to H.264 solves that compatibility problem but introduces generation loss and requires substantially more processing time.

The -crf 18 setting gives high-quality H.264 output; values around 20–23 produce smaller files with more compression. Match the source frame rate and dimensions unless the target device requires a specific AVCHD profile. MTS is a container, not a codec, so changing the extension or transport-stream wrapper cannot make unsupported H.265 video playable.
