What the VIV format is

In the Video category, .viv usually identifies a VivoActive video file created with Vivo Software's older proprietary video technology. VIV files were used for compressed video distributed through early websites, multimedia applications, and legacy VivoActive players.

The format is uncommon now, and current media players may lack its decoder. A VIV file is not the same as a standard MPEG container, so changing its filename extension does not convert it.

What the MTS format is

.mts is an MPEG transport stream commonly associated with AVCHD camcorders. It can contain H.264/AVC video with formats such as AC-3 or AAC audio and is supported by many video editors, media players, and camera-import workflows.

MTS is useful when an application expects a transport stream rather than a legacy web-video container. The extension alone does not guarantee AVCHD compliance: an MTS file can contain different codecs, resolutions, frame rates, and audio parameters.

How to actually convert VIV to MTS

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option because it can decode VivoActive video in builds that include the relevant Vivo decoder and can write an MPEG transport stream.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build.
  2. Place the source file in an accessible folder and inspect it with ffprobe input.viv.
  3. Run this command:
    ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.mts
  4. Open output.mts in the target editor or player and check the complete duration, picture, and audio.

The command decodes the VIV stream and re-encodes the video as H.264, encodes audio as AC-3 when an audio stream exists, and muxes both into an MPEG transport stream. The -map 0:a? option allows conversion of silent VIV files without failing because no audio track is present.

For software that specifically expects 192-byte AVCHD-style packets, add -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 before the output filename. Many applications accept ordinary 188-byte MPEG-TS packets, so this option is not universally required.

Using the website converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the VIV file, select MTS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Use the desktop method when the source contains sensitive material or when you need control over codecs, bitrate, and frame rate.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

VIV video is typically an old, heavily compressed source. Converting it to H.264 cannot restore detail lost during the original encoding; using a lower CRF value increases output quality and file size but does not recreate missing information. Avoid repeated conversions.

FFmpeg may report an unknown input format if the installed build lacks VivoActive support or if the file is damaged. In that case, try a current build and verify the file with the original VivoActive software or another legacy player before conversion. If the file cannot be decoded, changing the extension or placing it in an MTS container will not help.

The resulting file may be valid MPEG-TS without meeting every AVCHD requirement. If a camera, television, or editor rejects it, match that device's required H.264 profile, frame rate, resolution, audio sample rate, and AC-3 settings rather than relying only on the .mts extension.
